What You Will Do

Come join the LANL Institutional Quality and Performance Assurance Group! Use your Lean Six-Sigma (LSS) and Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) analytical skills to do something that matters! Los Alamos National Laboratory-one of the most innovative and creative multidisciplinary research institutions in the world-is looking for an experienced process improvement leader to drive mission and operational excellence through risk-informed, data driven decisions, and continuous institutional learning and improvement. This is a unique opportunity with excellent growth potential to support national and global security.

This position will be filled at either the Lean Six Sigma level 3 or 4, depending on the certification, skills, and experience of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Lean Six Sigma 3 ($101,700 - $168,200)

Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Team across the Laboratory, with all levels of workers and managers, to understand the process improvement needs of each organization and integrate these needs into a robust implementation and sustainment plan.

  • Apply Lean Six Sigma tools, techniques, and methodologies such as strategic gap analysis, lean, design for six sigma, and Kaizen events for organizational process improvements.

  • Mobilize and lead process improvement and/or Kaizen teams to drive organizational change, deliver value, facilitate partnerships, identify and eliminate defects, errors and variation, and acquire measurable financial benefits.

  • Conduct performance planning and analysis and develop accurate metrics and trending.

Lean Six Sigma 4 ($122,300 - $206,300)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the candidate would:

  • Educate Lean Six Sigma, Yellow Belts, Green Belts, Black Belts and other LSS staff.

  • Influence, coach, mentor and teach junior staff and customers.

  • Work independently without considerable direction on multiple projects and may coordinate activities of other personnel.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills and Expertise: Demonstrated extensive experience using Lean Six Sigma tools, techniques, and methodologies such as strategic gap analysis, lean, design for six sigma, Kaizen events, etc. Advanced analytics, risk management, and change management skills. You may be asked to provide and present a project out brief you've completed.

Customer-Focused Interactions: Advanced experience successfully interacting with customers involving matters related to quality, including the ability to advise and coach customers while promoting continuous improvements within a learning environment.

Team Building and Decision Making: Advanced team building skills and effective decision-making abilities.

Communication: Superior written and verbal communications skills and experience in small and large group facilitation. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.), experience with MiniTab, JMP or other statistical software.

Self-directed and Teamwork: Proven success working independently and in a team environment.

Education/Experience at lower level: This position requires a bachelor's degree, preferably in a relevant technical field, and a minimum of 8 years of related experience, or some equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Education/Experience at higher level: This position requires a bachelor's degree, preferably in a relevant technical field, and a minimum of 12 years of related experience, or some equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Desired Qualifications:

Additional Education and Certification: Master's degree, preferably in a related technical field and/or current professional certification as a Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt (LSSBB) or Master Black Belt (LSSMBB).

Relationship Management: Expert experience managing or supporting complex relationships, conflict resolution, and collaborative problem solving in an environment highly resistant to change.

Complex Technical Organizations: Advanced knowledge of and experience deploying integrated organizational-level, performance-based management systems in large, diverse, and/or complex scientific, engineering, and/or technical organizations, software implementation experience, and growing programs to maximize effectiveness across the organization.

Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position at the higher level is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
