Los Alamos National Laboratory LabVIEW Engineering Technologist (Engineering Technologist 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Automation, Robotics, and Controls Group (E-3) within the Engineering Technology and Design Division (E) is responsible for the design, development, and field support of data acquisition systems, process control systems, machine control systems, robotics, and safety systems. These systems are used for Pu Sustainment Programs, as well as a variety of additional programs throughout the Laboratory. Systems range from standalone commercial controller-based equipment to large, distributed computer-based systems. Your principal responsibilities will be developing LabVIEW software and integrating National Instruments hardware to support such projects. In E-3, we pride ourselves on an open and collaborative work environment where we work in multidisciplinary teams to meet our goals. Some work will be conducted in a radiological area.

Engineering Technologist 2 ($92,300 - $151,000)

As an Engineering Technologist 2 your responsibilities would include:

  • Design Instrumentation and Control Systems for programmatic and production process lines.

  • Utilize LabVIEW software tools to program automated operation of process equipment.

  • Select hardware interfaces based on application requirements.

  • Produce materials for technical reports, documents, and presentations.

Engineering Technologist 3 ($101,700 - $168,200)

In addition to what was outlined above, an Engineering Technologist 3 responsibilities include:

  • Interface with customers to understand application requirements, deliverables, and timeframes.

  • Apply advanced-level knowledge of LabVIEW to program automated operation of process equipment.

  • Provide schedule development, cost estimates, and project status to program offices.

  • Contribute to the development of new LabVIEW techniques to be implemented on new projects.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineering Technologist 2

  • Experience developing with LabVIEW.

  • Familiarity with basic LabVIEW architectures and best practices.

  • Experience with the design and implementation of system hardware and software.

  • Effective written and oral communication.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

  • Demonstrate appropriate initiative and decision making.

Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requ i res:

  • Experience developing complex LabVIEW programs integrating multiple types of hardware.

  • Experience planning and leading software development projects.

  • Keen ability to communicate and coordinate technical specifications and timelines.

  • Ability to recommend solutions on problems affecting design and production. 

  • Work with limited oversight.

Education/Experience at lower level : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

In addition to the minimum job requirements, candidates with expanded qualifications in any of the following areas are viewed favorable:

Software

  • Experience with LabVIEW FPGA programming

  • Experience with developing software with other languages (Python, C/C++, etc.)

  • Experience using version control tools (GIT, SVN, etc.)

  • Experience with Atlassian tools (JIRA, Confluence)

  • Working knowledge of Software Quality Assurance standards.

  • Demonstrated experience applying agile software development practices.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
