Los Alamos National Laboratory Engineering Technologist (Engineering Technologist 1) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Complex Response Solutions Group (A-5) is seeking a highly motivated technologist to support the NNSA's Office of Counterterrorism and Counterproliferation with focus on the Nuclear Threat Science

and Nuclear Incident Response missions. The Group contributes to national programs intended to counter, protect, and respond to weapons of mass destruction. The Group specializes in rapid prototyping,

designing / building / evaluating and delivering tools and trainers, and the development of novel safing technologies. The Group integrates across the Laboratory and teams externally to provide world-changing

solutions directly to the field for our customers and sponsors. This work is conducted at Q and SCI levels.

We are seeking an Engineering Technologist to assist in the assembly, operation and testing of training aids. The successful candidate will often work independently and interact with engineers, technicians,

machinists, inspectors and customers as part of a team to transform concepts and designs into deliverable products typically needed on short timescales to meet Global Security mission deliverables.

In this role, you will perform device design, assembly, and testing operations. You will be responsible for maintaining records, following operating procedures and integrated work documents, writing progress

reports and interacting with support organizations. The successful candidate will have general knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Electrical Systems & Tools

Proven experience in one or more of the following: designing and creating electrical systems, hand tools, instrumentation, measurement tools, electronics, troubleshooting electrical systems,

and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment. Familiarity with the use and function of common electrical equipment (meters, oscilloscopes, etc.) and hand tools.

Collaboration

Ability to work effectively, conscientiously, and professionally in a multidisciplinary and collaborative team environment.

Physical Requirement

Willingness to perform hands-on work in both laboratory and field. Wear and maintain proper PPE, understand and follow procedures.

Demonstrate Timeliness

Ability to be punctual and operate in an environment with changing priorities and strict deadlines.

Safety

Proven knowledge and implementation of required safety practices for work assignments

Communication Skills

Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in both written and oral format to personnel at all levels. Ability to read and understand schematics, work from documentation,

diagrams, rough sketches, layouts, plans and written or verbal instructions.

Clearance

Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.

Education

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience;

or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Weapons Experience:

Experience handling weapon components and knowledge of classified material handling and protection.

Software:

Experience with producing drawings using Express PCB, Altium, or similar 2D/3D design tools. Experience programming microcontrollers like Arduino.

Clearance:

Active Q/SCI clearance

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs

throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The

position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q/SCI(Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (https://www.directives.doe.gov/directives-documents/400-series/0472.2-BOrder-chg1-pgchg) for additional information.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
