Los Alamos National Laboratory Engineering Technologist 1/2 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

As a Shipping and transportation engineering technologist, you will be part of the high explosives (HEs) packaging and transportation team for Detonator Production (DP). You will support engineers and SMEs in developing HE packaging solutions, coordinating packaging test plans, and collecting the test data for detonator Final Hazard Classification (FHC) preparation and final NNSA approval. As one of the premier production agencies in the National Security Enterprise, DP works with a variety of stakeholders to provide high-quality products and services that support the nuclear stockpile, protect our nation, and promote world stability.

This position will report to the First Line Manager (FLM) and Group Leader (GL) in the Detonator Production Logistics and Supply Chain Management (DP-4) group.

Engineering Technologist 1 - $83,900 - $136,600

  • Assist in engineering studies to formulate, determine, and evaluate design criteria for HE shipping and packaging.

  • Contribute to the fulfillment of the DP mission deliverables.

  • Apply basic knowledge of engineering and mathematics to solve routine technical problems.

  • Make simple calculations and analyses in support of engineering.

  • Adhere to engineering policies, programs, procedures, and practices such as quality assurance plans and development and production manuals.

  • Assist engineers on packaging design.

  • Support manufacturing activities with strict adherence to HE safety, security, and quality.

Engineering Technologist 2 - $92,300 - $151,000

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level.

  • Assist with packaging tests, gather data needed by engineers, and prepare & review technical reports.

  • Assist with integrating production and development efforts to ensure the programmatic deliverables.

  • Assist engineers and designers on Detonator packaging design and fabrication.

  • Mentor and train junior technicians in the development and execution of detonator packaging and shipping.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team in a multidisciplinary and formal environment.

  • Demonstrated experience developing simple operating procedures. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Basic knowledge of industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.

Additional Job Requirements for Level 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Demonstrated experience working independently with general instruction and technical guidance provided by first-line management, team leader, or an R&D Engineer.

  • Demonstrated experience developing operating procedures for complex, moderate-hazard processes and the training of operators in performing these processes.

  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Knowledge of industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.

  • Experience preparing shipping documentation with high-level of documentation and labeling requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of and experience in planning and executing research and development projects, including test plans.

  • Use data to identify areas of poor quality or efficiency and collaborate with all stakeholders to develop and implement improvements to packaging and shipping processes more robust.

Education/Experience at lower level:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 2 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level:

Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

HAZMAT/Transportation: Thorough knowledge and understanding of transportation regulations (e.g., CFR Title 49) as applicable to the Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Energy (DOE), and/or Department of Transportation (DOT).

Packaging/Shipping : Thorough knowledge and understanding of packaging and shipping solutions and designs related to HAZMAT material.

Continuous Improvement: Demonstrated experience with continuous improvement (CI) efforts, such as Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen, or other methodologies.

Clearance - Active, ability to reinstate, or ability to obtain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances.
