What You Will Do

The Weapon Stockpile Modernization Division (Q Division) provides systems engineering and program management to develop and field qualified engineering solutions to improve the safety, reliability, and security of our nation's nuclear stockpile throughout the weapon life cycle. Q Division leads the development of new LANL weapons programs as well as life extension and alteration projects.

As a part of Q Division, the Advanced System Development Group (Q-18) is responsible for systems engineering & design of future weapons systems from conception through initial engineering design with emphasis on improved performance, safety, producibility, and agility of the future stockpile. Q-18 also provides system-agnostic system engineering support to a wide range of experiments including internally-fielded bench tests, hydrodynamic test, subcritical experiments, and system flight tests.

Q-18 is seeking an R&D Manager 3 to serve as a Deputy Group Leader (DGL) on our management team. The successful applicant in this position will work with the Q-18 Group Leader and other Q-18 Deputies to maintain progress in meeting programmatic milestones, keep customer and management informed of significant issues, and provide oversight for the scheduling and budgetary matters. Additionally, the selected candidate will work with Q Division managers and other leaders in the areas of operational planning, strategic planning, program implementation, communications, and execution of projects and deliverables. The new DGL will be expected to recognize and act on opportunities to influence directions, policy, and vision, both internal and external to the organization. This role is also responsible for supporting the hiring, onboarding, and development of new staff, providing mentorship and career planning for staff, conducting performance appraisals and salary management tasks, and addressing various personnel issues as they arise.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Nuclear Weapons Knowledge

Knowledge and experience with nuclear weapons and the U.S. stockpile including both Navy and Air Force delivery systems. Engineering experience related to Systems, Aerospace, or other fields directly related to weapons systems design and technology development. Experience with weapons related testing and experiments. Experience with weapon component manufacturing and assembly techniques.

Program/ Project Development Skills

Demonstrated experience in program development, advocacy, and strategic planning. Demonstrated utilization of project management principles and tools to delivering product on schedule, while engaging multiple projects with differing priorities.

Leadership Skills

Ability to identify, recruit, mentor, and retain innovative staff and support their development. Demonstrated record of developing and fostering successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems. Demonstrated dedication to safety and security of information and personnel.

Communication and Collaboration Skills

Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of Laboratory personnel and internal and external customers. Experience in working with and integrating multiple internal and external organizations to accomplish major project deliverables.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. An M.S. or Ph.D. in an engineering or physical science field and relevant experience is preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience interfacing with DoD, NNSA, and other agencies.

  • Demonstrated human resource experience with conflict resolution and in effectively addressing performance issues.

  • Prior experience in directing the administration of research and development employees including forecasting staffing requirements, directing assignments, assuring workforce development, monitoring performance, and initiating personnel actions.

  • Current Derivative Classifier credentials.

  • Ability to obtain a "Q" clearance and SCI clearance.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (https://www.directives.doe.gov/directives-documents/400-series/0472.2-BOrder-chg1-pgchg) for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
