Job Overview:

Provides routine processing of laboratory specimens by verifying patient information, order entry via computer terminals, labeling and delivery to the appropriate testing area; includes inpatient and outpatient requests. Patient samples delivered to the Microbiology Department to be accessioned, inoculated onto appropriate testing media and placed in incubators. Stocks technical benches in support of Medical Technologists. Answers phones and routes messages to appropriate personnel. Maintains a pleasant atmosphere for all customers. Is responsible for reporting identified safety issues such as hazardous environments (i.e. damaged floors/walls/ceiling tiles/unsecured areas) and medical errors, etc.

Essential Functions:

  • Answers telephones and dispatches messages pertaining to laboratory work from physicians, nurses, other departments and the general public to appropriate laboratory personnel in a friendly and courteous manner.

  • Assists in training of new employees.

  • Checks all admitting lab specimens received to their respective manuals. Calls admitting lab if any issues arise to correct immediately.

  • Completes duties as assigned and leaves area in a neat, organized manner.

  • Correctly fills out reference lab forms and places information in Triage logbook and specimens in correct send out box. Faxes over copy of the triage list to specific offices.

  • Delivers specimens to all sections in a timely manner.

  • Files all reference reports from different sections of the lab into the main filing system.

  • Fills all reference labs requisitions in appropriate filing system alphabetically. Fills clients supplies on a daily basis. Reports any shortages to supervisor

  • Generates laboratory requisitions indicating tests to be performed via computer terminal. Correctly identifies patient samples with computer databases and labels specimens according to established procedures.

  • Greets patients and obtains patient demographics as required to register patient in Hospital Information System.
