American Express (AXP) is looking for a colleague to provide corporate income tax and other direct tax advice to all lines of business in UK, Jersey and Ireland. This role is responsible for business advisory support within these countries, proactive management of tax audit and litigations, management of the relationship with the relevant Tax Authorities and Tax Advisors, assistance around the preparation of local Transfer Pricing documentation and implementation of transfer pricing policies. The role works with multiple stakeholders and functions, representing Global Tax in the relevant territories.

The role will provide best in class tax support to various business lines and other critical stakeholders of the corporation. This is an advisory and controversy focused role working with the wider, internationally based Global Tax team to identify opportunities and mitigate tax risk for the Group. This role reports to VP- Taxes EMEA region, located in London.

How will you make an impact in this role?

Core Responsibilities

  • To provide practical and accurate tax advice to the business and stakeholders.

  • Determine full corporate income tax and other direct tax implications of any new initiatives undertaken by the business or the organisation, including structural, organisational, treasury/finance and transfer pricing changes. Where appropriate, input to effective tax cost management advice thereon.

  • Communicate such tax impacts to stakeholders, ensuring these are understood. Where required, act as subject matter expert to any subsequent business or compliance processes changes implemented to support such implications.

  • Develop an understanding of the Company's existing tax positions at both a practical and legislative level, and articulate these as appropriate to the tax authorities, either during audit, or pre-emptively.

  • Assist in the management of tax authority and other audits/disputes with tax authorities, including any associated litigation, and managing the third-party relationships that litigation necessitates.

  • Understand the existing direct corporate tax landscape within EMEA, including proactive monitoring of case law/prospective legislation changes and determine whether the tax positions taken by the company remain appropriate as this landscape changes. Communicate changes to the risk profile of the company and/or opportunities to Leadership.

  • Support EMEA Tax Leadership in identification of corporate tax risks and opportunities.

  • Assist Tax Leadership to input to Tax lobbying via various channels and networking events.

  • Develop and maintain networks with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Proactively collaborate with the wider EMEA Tax Advisory team and Global Tax teams in New York, India and other regions to ensure effective and smooth business knowledge sharing to mitigate wider Tax risks. Work closely with the Tax Accounting team and local/regional finance teams to ensure tax exposures are understood and appropriately reported.

  • Drive effective governance and support control of the markets' tax processes to ensure AXP's compliance with all relevant tax laws.

  • Support tax processes and systems transformation to improve digital and process efficiency.

  • Lead or support projects and other tax tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Significant, high quality, impactful post-qualification direct tax experience gained in a reputable professional environment and/or large multinational corporate environment.

  • Hold a relevant professional qualification (i.e. legal, tax and/or accounting).

  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills; can synch analysis into solutions and impact. Able to interpret data to refine/quantify potential risk scenarios clearly.

  • A proactive work ethic exhibiting good teamwork, partnership and negotiation skills. Proven relationship builder across functions, levels and world zones; exudes a true, collaborative orientation.

  • Proven record of project ownership and finding practical solutions to issues.

  • Clear and open communication skills, including proven ability to distill and explain highly technical issues to a diverse audience.

  • Business level English language skills.
