Utah State University Enterprise Systems Administrator in Logan, Utah

This technical position, Enterprise System Administrator Series, is part of a team responsible for Utah State University's enterprise server architecture including the design, implementation, and securing of critical IT systems and services used by USU students, faculty, and staff.

Scope of responsibility may span both locally hosted systems and cloud IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS services. Some on-call, nights, and weekends may be required as necessary.

Primary duties and responsibilities are to:

  • Analyze, design, document, create, test, automate, secure and manage efficient and robust enterprise production systems from architecture through service, including prototypes to advance institutional needs.

  • Work with a variety of vendors, partners, teams, and customers regarding the design of enterprise hardware, software, cloud, and other system functional specifications to define and meet needs.

  • This position is also responsible for performing cost-benefit analysis on proposed improvements.

  • Create and update online support documentation using online tools and procedures.

  • Analyze tools and procedures and identify areas of improvement.

  • Perform regular audits of security, performance, and compliance on systems and software.

  • Document and respond to escalated system/design level service requests through an online "Issue Management" system.

  • Analyze tools and procedures and identify areas of improvement.

  • Provide user-friendly, secure, accurate and dependable systems and support to all persons (including technical peers) while providing follow-up to ensure their satisfaction with the systems, services, and solutions rendered.

  • Stay up to date on industry directions and opportunities to advise USU on systems and services futures.

Minimum Qualification:

  • Strong desire and ability to learn, keep up with, and drive emerging trends, platforms, architectures, and technologies.

  • Professional references supporting applicant’s qualifications for an Enterprise Systems Administrator / Analyst.

Systems Administrator I:

Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems (MIS), Computer Science (CS), or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Systems Administrator II:

Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems (MIS), Computer Science (CS), or related field plus two years of related work experience is required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Systems Administrator III:

Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems (MIS), Computer Science (CS), or related field plus four years of related work experience is required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Systems Administrator SR:

Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems (MIS), Computer Science (CS), or related field plus six years of related work experience is required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Four years or more hands-on experience implementing and maintaining enterprise level systems and services.

  • 2-4 years Linux and/or Windows server administration, security, and tuning experience.

  • Cloud architecture and platform experience.

  • Experience creating and managing containers (docker, Kubernetes, rancher).

  • System configuration management via Puppet, chef, git, svn or other tools.

  • Scripting (PowerShell, bash, etc.) experience.

  • Webserver management experience (apache/nginx/Microsoft IIS etc.).

  • Desire and ability to learn, keep up with, and drive emerging trends, platforms, architectures, and technologies.

  • Works well with others in a team environment.

  • Depth of understanding in networks and network security as it relates to enterprise systems administration.

  • Depth of understanding and practical experience in securing enterprise systems overall.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Positive attitude.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written).

  • Self-motivated problem solver.

  • Ability to work with limited supervision.

  • Excellent customer service skills.
