Summary:

The Registered Professional Nurse assigned to the Emergency Department and/or Inpatient Unit is responsible for the delivery of patient care through the process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation as appropriate to the ages of the patients served, based on the areas of clinical practice. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Maintains confidentiality of all hospital/staff information. Strives to incorporate the philosophy and mission of Mount Saint Mary's Hospital and to incorporate the Hospital's goal of: Quality care in a personal manner with total regard for individual human dignity.

Mount St. Mary's Hospital consists of multiple locations and associates may be assigned as needed.

Responsibilities:

EDUCATION

  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing required

  • RN licensure in New York State

  • Must possess current BLS within sixty (60) days from time of placement and must have current ACLS and PALS within twelve (12) months from time of placement.

  • Bachelor of Science (BSN) preferred

EXPERIENCE

  • Two (2) years of recent Medical/Surgical experience as a Registered Nurse; or one (1) year of recent CCU/ICU and/or Emergency Room experience as a Registered Nurse preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances

  • Exposed to: a variety of electro-mechanical hazards; odorous chemical and specimens; infection from disease-bearing specimens; hazards of handling diseased organs and tissues; hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment; Housekeeping/cleaning agents/chemicals; unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries and illness)

  • Flexibility in scheduled working hours/days to meet needs of unit

  • Adaptability to varying patient assignments; including, inpatient/ observation statuses.

  • Handles: absentee replacement on short notice; emergency or crisis situations (potential patient violence)

  • May be exposed to:infections and contagious diseases; biohazardous, radioactive substances; toxic chemicals (i.e. photocopier)

  • May perform emergency care

  • Occasional exposure to unpleasant patient or unit elements

  • Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquires

  • Occasionally exposed to radiation hazards

  • Occasionally subjected to irregular hours

  • Requires judgement/action which could result in death of patient

  • Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases

  • Required Protective Equipment:

  • Eye/face protection may be required
