Overview

Oversee the design, analysis, and development of various bridge projects. Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, cost-effective solutions that meet client requirements and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Direction

  • Receive general instruction on key objectives for execution. Receive direction as needed, and especially complex assignments, modified techniques, and new approaches on assignments with conflicting criteria. Work is completed using advanced techniques and principles and is reviewed by more senior staff to ensure application of sound professional judgement. Review work produced by junior staff for quality assurance.

At the Operational and Company Level

  • Work closely with more senior members to learn about and assist with engineering and planning work.

  • Assist with the marketing of the firm's capabilities to establish new clients and enhance relationships.

  • Coordinate with other disciplines and internal services/groups/offices as necessary.

Do the Work

  • Develop detailed designs and specifications for new bridge structures, including prestressed concrete, steel, and composite materials, utilizing industry-standard software and design codes.

  • Perform structural analysis and calculations to ensure the integrity and safety of bridge designs, considering factors such as load distribution, wind resistance, seismic activity, and environmental impacts.

  • Collaborate with more senior engineers in conducting feasibility studies and site investigations to assess the suitability of proposed bridge locations and identify potential challenges or constraints.

  • Collaborate with architects, civil engineers, and other stakeholders to integrate bridge designs into larger infrastructure projects, ensuring seamless coordination and alignment with project objectives.

  • Assist in preparing technical reports, drawings, and presentations to communicate design concepts, analysis results, and project progress to clients, regulatory agencies, and internal teams.

  • Review and evaluate contractor submittals, shop drawings, and construction plans to verify compliance with design specifications, standards, and quality requirements.

  • Provide technical guidance and support to junior engineers, drafters, and interns, fostering professional development and knowledge sharing within the team.

  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in bridge engineering, participating in professional development activities and continuing education programs as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related engineering discipline required.

  • Academic or internship experience in bridge design discipline preferred.

  • Three or more (3+) years of experience in bridge design and analysis preferred.

  • EIT required.

  • PE License preferred.

  • Working knowledge of structural analysis software such as Bentley Open Bridge Designer or similar tools required.

  • Working knowledge of relevant design codes and standards, including AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, ACI, and ASTM required.

  • Experience with Building Information Modeling (BIM) and computer-aided design (CAD) software preferred.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

  • Valid state driver's license and ability to successfully pass a motor vehicle check or reliable form of transportation to/from the office and/or project site strongly preferred.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

  • Primarily indoor professional office environment which may include bright/dim light, noise, fumes, odors, and traffic.

  • Mobility around an office environment.

  • Frequent and prolonged use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

  • Occasional outdoor work environment which may include adverse weather conditions, varying temperatures, excessive noise, and/or potential hazards.

  • Mobility around a job/construction site to include walking, bending, crawling, climbing, squatting, or kneeling and wearing of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Frequent and prolonged use of data collection equipment and/or drones, necessitating walking the assigned study area to complete data collection over the course of several hours.

  • Primarily local travel during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be required according to the needs of the business.

  • Occasional lifting or carrying up to 20 pounds.

  • Occasional pushing or pulling up to 20 pounds.

  • Occasional reaching outward or above shoulder.
