Position Title: Survey Crew Chief Department: Survey         Civil Service Status: Classified   FLSA Classification: Exempt General Purpose for Job:  Supervise employees assigned to perform surveying tasks; perform surveying. Reporting Structure for Survey Crew Chief Department Director or Administrator: Planning Engineer Department Manager: Planning Engineer                            First-level Supervisor: Planning Engineer                                                                                     Coordinates work of: Engineering Aide I, II, III and Miscellaneous Seasonal Workers                                          DUTIES (The duties listed below are illustrative of the work performed by this classification.  All duties are essential functions of the job unless otherwise noted.  The percentage of time allocated to each group of duties is approximate.) 50 % Time:

  • Conduct field surveys and special studies; performing calculations and recording results and data
  • Operate survey instruments and apply current surveying principles, practices and standards to gather and record data as appropriate for project
  • Measure and record angles, distances and elevations; perform mathematical calculations and transfer information to cross-section paper
  • Record object (e.g., trees, signs) location coordinates and data
  • Determine and record coordinates for private, county and township property boundaries and right-of-ways
  • Photograph or otherwise record miscellaneous data for inspectors (e.g., elevation, curbs, catch basins, etc.)
  • Research old surveys for information
  • Setting up field markers/stakes prior to start of construction projects, identifying boundaries, objects, topographical grades of significance

25% Time:

  • Supervision
    • Review application materials
    • Schedule employees for work and assign tasks
    • Review employee record of time worked to verify accuracy
    • Determine and secure an adequate supply of working equipment (complete with appropriate safety guards) needed to perform the work
    • Conduct orientation and training programs for new employees including the demonstration of proper methods for equipment operation, safety techniques and practices
    • Review work in progress; adjusting work methods as necessary to ensure timely completion and high quality of work. Review work upon completion
    • Observe and record employee performance-related incidents for use in compiling performance evaluations. Recommend disciplinary action as necessary and discuss performance issues with employees.
