The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Program Division is seeking a technically deep and operationally oriented Software Architect with strong hands-on DevSecOps experience to provide technical leadership of a challenging enterprise transformation opportunity for our Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense sponsor. The candidate selected will be co-located with government senior leadership in Dahlgren, VA and be responsible for the technical integrity and quality of products and deliverables, partnering with and supporting the Project Leader for strategic work-shaping, and executing senior sponsor relationship management.

As a senior leader within the MDA work program, the individual selected will provide thought leadership and technical guidance in the domains of digital transformation and modern software acquisition to enable the sponsor to successfully transform their culture and software products to achieve high velocity and high integrity weapon systems capabilities. The MDA Division is seeking a “thought leader” who will represent MITRE’s technical excellence and integrity across our corporation, our sponsor domain, the FFRDC/UARC community, and industry. The successful candidate will be a critical thinker with deep technical skills and have a demonstrated track record of fostering, promoting, and/or fielding innovative ideas and solutions for sponsors.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Be recognized as an expert in software engineering field and directly contribute to high-impact solutions. Bring the company to bear―MITRE Labs, the MITRE Innovation Program (MIP), and Scalable Platform Solutions―to drive innovation – in support of sponsors’ missions and priorities. Outreach, engage and collaborate across the corporation, with academia, industry, FFRDCs/UARCs and government to develop and bring the best solutions to our sponsors which demonstrate MITRE’s FFRDC Differential Value and Culture.

  • Guide the sponsor’s technical investments, technical initiatives, lab environments, and development of staff skills. In collaboration with the Project Leader, engage with sponsors to bring and independent and differentiated perspective from other MITRE experts to maximize sponsor value.

  • In close coordination with Division Leadership, Department Leadership, and the Project Leader, ensure the technical strength of the team, the technical integrity and quality of our deliverables, and establish partnerships with other FFRDCs/UARCs in the domain area. Support differentiated value by ensuring that MITRE is continuously and effectively leveraging staff, capabilities, and investments from across the corporation to maximize impact to the Aegis BMD Program.

  • In support of MDA’s Digital Transformation vision and goals, assist the customer in the development of a roadmap to implement their vision through alignment of efforts across a broad stakeholder base. Address the sponsors’ most pressing needs, priorities and outcomes; anticipate future needs; and apply critical and innovative thinking to achieve significant, measurable impact.

  • Build and foster relationships, networks, cross-agency solutions, and potentially new organizational constructs across MITRE and the MDA work program - driving cross-sponsor approaches to increase MITRE’s overall impact.

Required Qualifications:

  • Technical Presence:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 12 years of experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (or equivalent); or 10 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 7 years’ experience; or equivalent combination in the area of Software Engineering

  • 10 years of hands-on experience, with technical depth and leadership in Software Architecture and DevSecOps/DevOps, with any mix of the following experience: systems engineering, IT/hardware/IaaS, CI/CD pipeline, cATO and DoD software acquisition pathway.

  • Possess the ability to define complex projects or programs, via the Mission Value Chain (MVC), MITRE Maturity Model, and MITRE Good Growth Strategy.

  • Leadership Presence:

  • Communicates in a compelling fashion across the organization (oral and written); inspires trust through vision for the program and the work environment they create; a demonstrated leader MITRE staff members want to follow.

  • Effective at developing close working relationships with senior leaders and sponsors as a trusted adviser for the leadership on major initiatives, technical challenges, and priorities.

  • Proven ability to lead, nurture and develop technical talent and teams

  • Independent Execution:

  • Demonstrate adaptability and flexibility to execute independently across a diverse set of thought leaders and stakeholders

  • Self-starter and effective time management skills.

  • Active TS level security clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Recognized expert in at least one of the following areas: Software Architecture, DevOps/DevSecOps, Aegis Weapon System

  • Familiarity with how software impacts and relates to supporting Homeland Defense Mission, especially the criticality of end-to-end latency reduction to ensure engagement timelines.

  • Familiarity with the related missions in the following agencies: National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), Missile Defense Agency (MDA), Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), Naval Information Warfare Command (NIWC), PEO Integrated Weapon Systems (PEO IWS), PEO Command, Control, Communication, Computers and Intelligence (PEO C4I) and the Space Defense Agency (SDA).

  • Familiarity with related initiatives within MDA and Navy: MDA Digital Transformation, Project OVERMATCH, FORGE & OVERMATCH Software Armory (OSA)

  • MS/PhD in a computer science field and 10 years of related experience

  • TS/SCI level security clearance with SAP eligibility
