Our greatest asset has been, and will continue to be, our people.  We are looking for an experienced and motivated individual to fill the position of Electrical Engineer in our US Onshore Resources & Carbon Management (ORCM), Production Operations Business Unit based in Levelland, or Midland, Texas. A company vehicle will be provided for work-related commute and travel. 

The Electrical Engineer will support all aspects of the field electrical infrastructure, including, but not limited to: 

  • Provide electrical engineering support, start up, and troubleshooting for power distribution equipment; high, medium and low voltage substations; transformers; switchgear; motor control centers; protective relays; variable frequency drives; soft starters; and motors.
  • Provide support during the design phase for small and major projects, developing load flow, short circuit, relay coordination, arc flash, motor start, dynamic stability, and/or harmonic studies using Windmil or ETAP.
  • Develop and test protective relay programs for SEL or Multilin relays.  Assist with / supervise relay testing via current injection with Doble ProTest software. Develop settings for LV circuit breakers. Produce protection coordination studies using ETAP, EasyPower, or LightTable.
  • Provide support for solid state power electronic devices including low and medium voltage soft starts, variable frequency drives from 480V to 12.47kV, and excitation controls for large synchronous motors.
  • Perform system modeling to ensure optimum efficiency using capacitor banks and voltage regulators on power distribution systems.
  • Responsible for factory acceptance testing for LV and MV electrical devices and start-up of small and major projects. Reviews HV and LV cable and motor testing, HV and LV transformer testing (including CT polarity / ratio, insulation, impulse, heating, applied, and induced voltage tests). Evaluate LV and HV switchgear and breaker testing results, timing, contact resistance, and insulation.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering

Professional/Technical Knowledge: Expert knowledge of electrical systems

Experience:

  • 10 years of experience
  • 5 years of field-related experience
  •  Valid driver's license

Skills & Competencies:

  • In depth experience with start-up of electrical projects / electrical substations up to 230kV and switchgear (2.4kV up to 24.9kV). 
  • Knowledge of power electronics and motor controls on VFDs, soft starts, and across-the-line starters.
  • Strength with relay settings and programing for distribution feeders, transmission lines, transformers, reclosers, and motors. Must have experience programming Schweitzer relays.
  • Experience with large (5000HP ) synchronous motors
  • Strong communication skills (verbal/written/listening/presentation)
  • Problem solving skills with ability to analyze and recommend solutions to problems of high complexity.
  • Familiar with root cause analysis of electrical failures.
  • Must be knowledgeable of electrical safety requirements as found in publications such as NFPA 70E.
  • Must have experience calculating arc flash hazards via IEEE 1584
  • Be experienced in load transfer or switching at voltage levels from 480 volts through 230,000 volts and be capable of writing switching procedures for field execution.
  • Expert level competency in oil and gas electrical systems
