Argonne National Laboratory Technician III - Electro-Mechanical / Technician Sr - Electro-Mechanical in Lemont, Illinois

Argonne National Laboratory’s Accelerator Systems Division (ASD) provides best-in-class operation, maintenance and upgrade of the Advanced Photon Source accelerators and support users in doing outstanding science in a safe environment.

Argonne's Accelerator Systems Division is seeking a Technician III - Electro-Mechanical/Technician Sr - Electro-Mechanical to:

  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of a cryogenic plant and support systems for the new Bunch Lengthening System (BLS) installed at the Advanced Photon Source (APS).

  • Work with systems including liquid helium, liquid nitrogen, control, vacuum, and instrumentation.

  • Collaboratively work with and under the supervision of mechanical engineers and X-Ray scientists.

  • Operate and maintain plant equipment and assist with maintaining plant procedures and safety documents.

  • Maintain all aspects of the mechanical and electromechanical assemblies that support the cryogenic plant while performing all job functions safely and efficiently.

Position Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Mechanical Experience – Demonstrated proficiency in operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of gas compressors, gas management systems, pressure systems and cryogenic systems.

  • Electrical Experience – Ability to use multi-meters and other basic measuring tools. Proficient in the troubleshooting, installation and termination of basic electronic cabling system and control chassis.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical procedures, electrical schematics, P&ID’s, and engineering mechanical drawings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working as a technician at a helium cryogenic facility or laboratory.

  • Experience with fabrication, operation, and maintenance of liquid helium cryostats in R&D settings.

  • Experience with Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems.

  • Experience with electrical power systems up to 480 VAC.

  • Technical experience with vacuum systems.

Other:

  • This position requires periods of on-call status, where the individual will be required to respond to system events on a 24/7 basis.

This position can be hired at one of two levels; the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (TECH III or TECH Sr.) dependent upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills. The minimum requirements of the two levels are as follows:

  • TECH III - Associate's degree & 3 years of experience, or equivalent

  • TECH Sr. - Associate's degree & 5 years of experience, or equivalent
