Argonne National Laboratory Isotope Program Manager in Lemont, Illinois

Argonne National Laboratory is seeking an Isotope Program Manager for our Radioisotope Research and Production Program (R2P2). The candidate will be responsible for managing the isotope science and engineering program within the Nuclear Technologies and National Security Directorate. This program focuses on the synthesis, recovery and purification of medical radioisotopes with exceptional promise for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The Isotope Program Manager will be the primary technical point-of-contact for Argonne with the Office of Isotope Research, Development and Production and be responsible for leading planning, including strategy development, and managing the day-to-day activities and personnel of the program. This role will lead a matrixed, cross-laboratory team and will work closely with the Isotope Production Manager and technical staff executing programmatic activities. The Program Manager will be responsible for guiding isotope research including the transition of new isotopes from R&D to production. The candidate will lead the development of experimental plans and safety documentation, experimentation and data analysis.

Position Requirements

The Isotope Program Manager will also be responsible for developing novel methods and procedures for medical isotope production using the LINAC at Argonne’s Low Energy Accelerator Facility and conducting R&D focused on the separation (e.g., solvent extraction, ion exchange) of a wide spectrum of radionuclides including medical isotopes, lanthanides and actinides. The candidate is expected to have experience with techniques such as UV-Vis, NMR, FTIR, and electrochemistry with systems containing radioactive elements. Argonne is seeking candidates with the following characteristics:

  • Demonstrated success at sponsor program management of similar size and complexity, including:

  • development of program strategy, planning, and budgeting,

  • management of program execution (e.g., cost, schedule, performance, risk),

  • leading small teams to effectively meet program goals,

  • facilitation of productive cross-organizational and interdisciplinary collaboration,

  • sponsor relationship development and sustainment, and

  • effective written and oral communications.

  • Demonstrated technical experience in/with:

  • the chemical separation of radionuclides,

  • radioanalytical methods,

  • characterization techniques such as spectroscopic and electroanalytical methods, and

  • the safe handling and use of radioactive materials.

  • Experience in new ligand design and synthesis is desirable, but not required.

  • Knowledge of certified good manufacturing practices and the quality assurance requirements associated with radioisotope systems is desirable, but not required.

  • To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract.

  • Work conducted under this posting will require the appointee to obtain a security clearance.

This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in radiochemistry, nuclear chemistry or chemical engineering at the Ph.D.-degree level with more than 10+ years experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience.
