Job Description:

70% - Provide group-instruction of the GRE quantitative, qualitative test preparation, and analytical writing, including preparing curriculum, selecting study/learning materials.

15% - Provide assessment of the GRE test (pre-test, ongoing assessment of progress, and post-test).

10% - Provide individual tutoring for McNair Scholars and monitor individual progress (quantitative, qualitative, and analytical writing sections).

5% - Other duties assigned by program director, including encouraging and supporting McNair Scholar Program’s mission of preparing underrepresented students for graduate study.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Have earned a Bachelor’s degree in any field.

  2. A score of 310 or higher on the GRE (submission of score required).

  3. Previous experience providing tutoring/teaching equivalent to no less than one semester as outlined in application materials.

  4. Ability to maintain organized, detail-oriented records and documentation as evidenced by application materials and verifiable with previous employer(s) (i.e. attendance, assignments, student grades, logs of tutoring sessions, and appointment logs, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Excellent presentation skills.

  2. Previous GRE instruction/tutoring experience to no less than one semester.

  3. Previous teaching or tutoring experience with large groups.

  4. Evidence of active and ongoing classroom management as demonstrated by application materials and verifiable with previous employer(s).

  5. Experience communicating effectively.

  6. Demonstrated mastery of all GRE test portions.

  7. Knowledge of the GRE’s purpose, content, structure and scoring system.

  8. Previous experience with TRIO students or similar population.

Position Overview:

The University of Kansas McNair Scholars Program (https://mcnair.ku.edu/) is seeking an Instructional Specialist. The successful candidate is an individual committed, in theory and practice, to the principles of equitable educational opportunities and who can fully incorporate this goal into the services provided for low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented minority college students. The Instructional Specialist will work with undergraduate students engaged in group and individual instruction for the New Revised GRE test. Including preparing students for the analytical writing test and building their academic writing. The Instructional Specialist reports to the Director of the McNair Scholars Program.
