Science Systems and Applications, Inc. Intern– Machine Learning Classification Project (Python) in Lanham, Maryland

Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking a high-school junior or senior or college undergraduate intern to support a supervised machine learning (ML) classification project funded by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) for the summer of 2024. The purpose of the project is to build an ML model that can reliably predict the appropriate organization within NASA's Earth Science Data and Information System to which incoming first-level help desk tickets should be routed. The intern's efforts will be focused on creating the training and test data sets from the subjects and original messages of existing support tickets, evaluating and tuning various algorithms, and creating an application to apply the most successful models for production use. The work will include learning important skills in natural language processing to extract relevant information from the unstructured text of support tickets, and reviewing similar case studies in other domains, many of which were able to achieve reliable performance and significant cost and productivity gains.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school or undergraduate college student with a background in computer science/physical sciences/engineering.

  • Experience with Python programming, including Jupyter Notebooks.

  • Experience using GitHub, REST APIs, and HTML/XML parsing.

  • A strong candidate must possess excellent communication skills and work well with a team.

  • Permanent Residency or US citizenship required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of machine learning fundamentals is desired.
