Science Systems and Applications, Inc. Carbon Cycle and Modeling Intern in Lanham, Maryland

Science Systems and Applications Inc. (SSAI) is seeking interns to support carbon cycle modeling using AI/ML techniques with Earth-observing datasets. The intern will support the development of tools, techniques, and algorithms for the assessment of terrestrial carbon stores within vegetation using satellite data.

Duties Include but no limited to:

  • Developing AI/ML algorithms to identify vegetation.

  • Manually identifying vegetation from Earth-observing imagery.

  • Working with a team to develop novel approaches for carbon cycle modeling.

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidates must currently be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate course of study in computer science, biology, environmental science, data science, or similar degree program.

  • Candidate must have experience with coding in Python, R, MATLAB, or similar languages.

  • Permanent Resident or US Citizen required.

Desired:

  • Experience with developing and/or training AI/ML models.

  • Experience with GIS datasets.

  • Ability to collaborate within a team environment and work independently to deliver individual contributions.

    Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
