State of Massachusetts Contracted Student Interns in Lakeville, Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is the state agency responsible for ensuring clean air and water, the safe management of toxics and hazards, the recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, the timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources. * *Wastewater Management – Cape & Islands This program runs from June 2024 - October 2024 There are two parts to this project: inspection assistance and town wastewater management tracking. MassDEP Division of Wastewater Management (DWM) is a program within the Bureau of Water Resources. The Cape Cod and Islands section has about 85 groundwater discharge permitted facilities. The focus for inspections for FY24 is within the Towns of Barnstable, Yarmouth, Dennis, Brewster, Harwich, Chatham, Orleans and the Island of Nantucket. Part 1 of this project involves permit compliance inspections within these towns. An intern would accompany the MassDEP supervisory engineer on compliance inspections at groundwater discharge facilities within the above-mentioned towns. The number of inspections conducted will be subject to the schedule of the intern, as MassDEP will not expect the intern to accompany the MassDEP engineer on every inspection. At inspections, the intern would take notes and capture pictures alongside the MassDEP supervisory engineer as the engineer interviews the operator and inspects the facility. Upon return to the office, the intern would help form the first draft of the inspection report for review by the DEP Engineer. This is an excellent opportunity for an intern to learn how MassDEP conducts inspections, improve their knowledge of wastewater treatment technology and improve their technical writing skills. Part 2 of this project involves the broader initiative of the Cape and Islands section of MassDEP DWM Cape and islands. The Cape and Islands section is involved in a number of exciting initiatives in partnership with different municipalities. MassDEP has encouraged many of the communities to reduce their nitrogen contribution to the groundwater in an effort to restore impaired waterbodies, improve habitat quality within the various number of estuaries and protect its sole source aquifer. The selected intern would record meeting minutes for watershed permitting related meetings to help track activity for each town. Additionally, the intern may also have the opportunity to assist MassDEP analysts and engineers with documentation preparation for groundwater discharge permit application review. * Accompany MassDEP supervisory engineer on inspections at wastewater treatment facilities in various Cape Cod towns. * Attend permitting, town watershed permitting, and comprehensive wastewater management meetings. * Take notes of observations made at compliance inspections and meetings. * Compile groundwater discharge permit related documents and prepare for permit application review. * Using Microsoft Word to draft inspection report based on observations made at compliance inspection for MassDEP supervisory engineer review and feedback. * Using Microsoft Word to compile inspection interview questions into SOP document for future internal training use.
