Key Job Elements:

Lead customer and product requirements for platform locomotive to achieve market share, cost, and profitability objectives.

Work with the broader Caterpillar enterprise on technology developments for locomotives (i.e., Cat batteries).

Participates in the selection of new employees.

Trains, develops, assigns work and evaluates immediate subordinates and responsible for overall departmental planning and objectives.

Position interfaces with Next Gen platform manager and utilizes components/structures which are available and align with standardization strategy.

Prepares and manages departmental expense and CAPEX budgets. Provides resource and cost estimates, and forecasts of expenditures.

Respond and manages new sales inquiries in a timely manner and create customer technical proposals; Tasks include locomotive performance studies, project cost estimates, and engineering cost estimates.

Guide the design of the product to include reliability improvements, cost out initiatives, and TCO goals. Participates in Continuous Product Improvement process.

Organize meetings with customers, vendors, and certifying agencies, making presentations and negotiating technical issues.

Ensure all health, safety, legal and railroad regulatory (FRA, AAR, EN, AS/RISSB) requirements are being met throughout the process.

Qualifications and Experience:

• 10+ years of locomotive or relevant experience required;

• Knowledge of locomotive systems, such as structure, engine, cooling system, electrical system, pneumatic system, bogie, ventilation, or software;

• Responsible to manage a small team of system engineers. Position also sets requirements for sub-systems;

• High level of analytical abilities where problems are very complex;

• High level of written and oral communication skills;

• Strong personal skills and the ability to work in groups;

• Project or team lead experience;

• Travel as required (approx. 25%).

Preferred:

• Locomotive systems experience, or previous job assignments in multiple engineering disciplines;

• Familiarity with EMD / CAT engineering processes and systems;

• Experience in a customer facing role;

• Familiarity with Polarion, DOORS or similar requirements management tools;

• Familiarity with international standards and regulations (FRA, AAR, EN, AS/RISSB);

• MS in Engineering, or MBA;

• Experience with project management methodology;

• Prior experience in testing, commissioning, or field service engineering.

Essential and Physical Activities Functions:

• Strength – Position typically involves work in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment. Frequent sitting. Occasional standing and walking. Occasional light to medium-level lifting (up to 30 pounds);

• Motion – Position regularly requires standard motions associated with working in an office environment;

• Vision/Hearing Requirements – Frequent verbal communications, including both talking and hearing;

• Work Environment – Position is typically located in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment which may include a non-temperature-controlled environment, as well as exposure to noise (85+ decibels), occasional exposure to temperature changes, heavy machinery and other hazardous working conditions requiring the use of PPE;

• Emotional Demands – Very high level of responsibility. Must be able to coordinate diverse aspects of a project. Requires significant interpersonal skills while sustaining very high standards;

• Safety – This is not a safety sensitive position, but may occasionally require the use of Personal Protective Equipment during visits to industrial areas.
