Job Purpose:

Contribute to customer satisfaction through the application of specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities to tasks / projects associated with the products we design, manufacture, sell, and other related services we provide. Work involves independent judgement, decision-making, and creativity. The Customer Engineer is responsible for answering technical questions from customer representatives, analyzing warranty failure data, identifying and driving continuous improvement projects, recommending product or process improvements, and providing regular updates / presentations to internal and external customers. This position’s area of expertise is locomotive mechanical systems.

Key Job Elements:

• Recognize, analyze, and resolve technical problems involving Progress Rail products;

• Coordinate service activities necessary to resolve problems or monitor product performance at Progress Rail or on customer property;

• Communicate status of product performance and problem resolution to Progress Rail management and field personnel;

• Coordinate cross-functional teams to drive problems to solutions through our Continuous Product Improvement process;

• Analyze warranty data to spot failure trends.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Strong organizational skills;

• High level of interpersonal skills required to work effectively with customers and others;

• Strong verbal and written communication skills required in dealing with customers;

• Comfortable using common computer applications to perform routine tasks (SAP/MSOffice);

• Understanding of engineering theory and principles of design;

• Ability to work independently and with others;

• Ability to manage and track multiple on-going projects;

• Willing to travel on extended basis (domestic and international);

• Basic locomotive knowledge.

Preferred:

• Technical troubleshooting experience on Progress Rail products;

• Six Sigma Green Belt or higher;

• Shainin Apprentice or higher;

• Project management experience.

Essential and Physical Activities Functions

• Strength – Position typically involves office managerial work as well as oversight of field industrial activities. Occasional sitting. Constant standing, and walking. Frequent medium-to-heavy level lifting (more than 30 pounds);

• Motion – Position regularly requires standard motions associated with an industrial environment focused on locomotive repair, including stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, reaching, handling, grasping, feeling, pushing, pulling, carrying, and lifting;

• Vision/Hearing Requirements – Constant verbal communications, including both talking and hearing;

• Work Environment – Position is Safety Sensitive and will require the use of Personal Protective Equipment. Position typically involves a normal office environment, but also may occasionally involve work in a non-temperature-controlled environment and exposure to atmospheric conditions. Position includes exposure to noise (85+ decibels), exposure to extreme temperatures, exposure to hazardous materials, heavy equipment, and other hazardous working conditions;

• Emotional Demands – Very high level of responsibility and physical workload. Requires interpersonal skills while working with a group to meet customer service demands;

• Safety – Position is Safety Sensitive and will require the use of Personal Protective Equipment.
