Job Information

Watco Companies L.L.C. Deckhand (In Port Services Only) - Ghent, KY in KY, United States

Hourly pay rate: $18.00 - $20.00

  • This is in-port services.

General Purpose

  • The Deckhand is responsible for the safe, efficient, reliable, and environmentally compliant operation of assigned area.

  • Must know how to respond in case of emergency / (MAN OVERBOARD)

  • Understanding and comprehension of duties and responsibilities.

  • Must have or the ability to obtain a TWIC card.

  • The primary function of the Deckhand is to build and break tows, maintain the fleet insuring all barges are secure. Duties are to be performed in a safe and compliant manner.

  • All deckhand personnel will successfully complete all required training

  • The Deckhand must be able to perform vessel maintenance to include cleaning, scraping, painting, changing all fuel and oil and filters.

  • Follow written procedures for M/v Fueling

  • Inspect and look for any deficiencies or housekeeping issues correct if possible, notify the Captain of any conditions, which could affect the safety of Team members, tow or tug.

  • Be Able to assist with the training of newly hired Team members handle lines and rigging during tow building, docking activities.

  • Use proper knots when tying off barges

  • Must be able to work in a rotation schedule, be able to work additional overtime as needed

  • Demonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendance.

  • Must be able to perform all duties while wearing protective equipment to include PFD, PVC foul weather gear, gloves, safety glasses and Met guard boots.

  • Must be able to adhere to and comply with company policies, United States Coast Guard and environmental regulations.

  • Follow written and verbal directions to complete assigned tasks on schedule.

  • Read, write, and communicate in English & understand basic math.

  • Learn from directions, observations, and mistakes and apply procedures using good judgment.

  • Working knowledge of Watco Safety and Operating principles

  • Work independently or as part of a team and interact appropriately with others.

  • Receive oral or written instructions from Supervisors / Boat Pilot indicating which barges are to be handled

  • Notifies Boat Pilot of distances to cells or barges using radio, verbal and possible hand signals.

  • Follow the SOP for proper tying and all barge movement procedures

  • Team mate must have good balance and coordination in order to safely walk over catwalks, barge decks and over uneven and/or slippery surfaces.

  • May coordinate activities of sweeping dock, roadways and pushing material up in barges and on dock. (Skid Steers, Wheel loader)

  • Responsible for proper placement and stowing of gear

  • Responsible for assisting in spotting of barges at the Ghent facility and DOW chem

    Machines, Tools, Special Equipment, Personal Protective Equipment Used

  • Hand tools, Skid Steers, wheel loader, sweeper and water truck

  • Ratchets, wires, wenches and lines, PPE: hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, Metatarsal steel toed boots, PFD and PVC foul weather gear.

    Requirements

  • All Team Members working in the Ghent Facility must have a valid Driver’s License.

  • Ability to pass training and required testing.

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements are a representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability is required. Other duties as assigned.
