Exempt Status:                  Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Position Objective / Description:

Performs a variety of manual construction tasks involving roads, highways and heavy construction projects under the direction of a crew foreman.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor in heavy/highway construction projects

  • Work site set up, maintenance, and cleanup, to include scaffolding construction and dismantling, barricade locating, and equipment locating.

  • Load, unload, or distribute materials, machinery, or tools to and from designated locations

  • Direct traffic at or near building sites and carry out other traffic management activities

  • Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, or compact and level earth

  • Use picks, shovels, and rakes to level earth or asphalt to grade specifications

  • Position or dismantle forms for pouring concrete, using saws, hammers, nails or bolts

  • Tends pumps, compressors, or generators

  • Signal operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment and movement of materials

  • Assist craft workers, such as carpenters, ironworkers, plasterers and masons

  • Measure, mark, or record openings or distances as part of site preparation

  • May be called upon to operate a variety of power and hand tools: air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, mechanical hoists, surveying, measuring and other equipment

  • Maintain clean work area by disposing of trash and debris properly.

  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment.

  • Promote and adhere to the company’s safety program.

                   

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to operate a variety of tools and equipment such as hand tools, power tools and motorized equipment.

  • Ability to listen, follow directions, and have a willingness to continue to enhance skills

  • Able to communicate effectively with jobsite supervisor and co-workers

  • General knowledge of road construction processes.

  • Demonstrate a safety first attitude. Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures.

  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public

  • Ability to work nights and weekends when necessary

  • Must have reliable transportation, and ability to travel to assigned worksites

    Physical Demands:

  • Constant physical effort, including extended standing for at least 8 hour shift

  • Intermittent sitting; continuous walking on construction site.

  • Climb intermittently

  • Regularly twist, bend, stoop, kneel and crouch to perform duties

  • Regularly reach above shoulder level

  • Regularly push/pull objects

  • Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 75 pounds on a regular basis, and sometimes heavier weight.

  • Agility, balance, and manual dexterity, as well as arm-hand steadiness

  • Able to hear and respond to oral instructions in a noisy environment.

  • Regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach and grasp with hands and arms.

  • Excellent hand, eye and foot coordination.

  • Good vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus

    Education / Experience:

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED)

  • One (1) years’ experience working as general laborer on highway construction projects, or equivalent experience.

  • Active Driver’s license

    Work Environment:

    Regularly works in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and humidity. Frequently works near moving mechanical parts, and is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions and vibration. Handles various toxic products such as epoxies, grouts, sealers, paints and cleaners, with exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risks of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
