Amazon Equipment Mechanic (2nd Shift Lead), Kuiper in Kirkland, Washington

Description

Project Kuiper is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Its mission is to bring fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities around the world. Project Kuiper will help close the digital divide by delivering fast, affordable broadband to a wide range of customers, including consumers, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in places without reliable connectivity.

As a Lead Equipment Mechanic for 2nd shift, you will be engaged installing, commissioning, and maintaining specialty equipment with the ultimate goal of supporting satellites from the stages of early testing, integration, through to launch and on to production stability. You will maintain complex mechanical, electrical and vacuum chambers to ensure their efficient operations and reliable testing. You will work closely with colleagues throughout Project Kuiper’s inter-disciplinary team to ensure that critical needs and demands on second shift are being met. You will be essential in the on-time delivery of hardware capable of achieving mission success as you are directly responsible for all equipment supporting these functions, and will have broad scope and autonomy to fill all gaps between equipment concept and operations. You will work closely with your first shift team members to ensure critical pass downs and communications are being provided daily. You will lead the charge to develop, improve, review and maintain the preventative maintenance program while ensuring appropriate procedures in place to supporting spacecraft testing and builds.

Key job responsibilities

  • Hands on installation of mechanical systems, electrical sub-systems, and troubleshooting related to a variety of manufacturing equipment

  • Develop, design, and implement solutions to difficult problems with a sense of urgency

  • Establish preventative maintenance programs from concept to implementation

  • Maintain the operation of equipment and systems in the areas of responsibilities such as compressed air, electrical distribution, CNC machines and test equipment

  • Manage internal and external maintenance technicians

  • Coordinate, schedule and manage multiple projects while meeting tight deadlines

  • Ensure all environmental, health safety procedures are followed by onsite personnel

  • Work across teams to develop clear and concise project details for mechanical, electrical, and machine functionality requirements allowing for expedient installations leading to successful operations

  • Coordinate with engineering, operations, contractors, and maintenance teams to define design facility requirements for specialty equipment during initial stages of design through completion of installation

  • Establish effective relationships with teams across the program

  • Develop an understanding of local permit processes

  • Manage utility budgets for the facilities as equipment is defined and installed

About the team

The Kuiper Equipment Group supports the Space Simulation and Manufacturing teams by installing, commissioning, and maintaining equipment that will provide screening and testing of satellite hardware. The lab has the capability to perform testing in the R&D, Proto-Flight, Qualification and Flight test phases. This will be done utilizing equipment in the lab such as electrodynamic shakers, thermal vacuum chambers, thermal cycling chambers and other equipment to simulate the space environment while assuming responsible for assembly, integration, and test of satellite hardware and the associated equipment and facility definition required to achieve production rates.

Basic Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in facility trades and codes including construction, electrical, HVAC, Plumbing, fire-suppression, rigging, ISO Cleanrooms, pneumatics, LN2, pneumatics, etc. in a test lab or manufacturing environment.

  • At least 1 year hands on experience working with basic hand tools.

  • At least 1 year experience unloading, installing, commissioning, and maintaining equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BA or BS in Construction Management, Project Management, Architecture, Engineering or equivalent experience

  • 5+ years program or project management experience in facilities projects

  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability in managing teams, project execution and delivery

  • Proficient in MS Excel and MS Project

  • CAD experience

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $48,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $93,500/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
