Kenworth’s Fuel Cell EV class 8 truck aims to be one of the first mass produced Hydrogen powered, Zero Emission trucks on the North American market. The Engineering project team at Kenworth, based in Kirkland, WA is leading this activity for the whole PACCAR organization.

Requisition Summary:

The Controls Systems Owner oversees the Software development of the various systems required for the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power unit’s integration into Kenworth’s T680 truck. Everything from Torque arbitration, eFan control circuits, retarder strategy, diagnostics, interface controllers etc.

The candidate will be central to design, testing and validation – taking the truck from mature prototype into international Market Launch. Collaborating with Stakeholders at internal and external test facilities, DAF in the Netherlands, our Fuel Cell partners – Toyota, and both Software and Hardware engineering functions in the PACCAR group.

Our Hydrogen Fuel Cell class 8 truck aims to be one of the first volume Zero Emission trucks on the North American market. This is an opportunity to join a dynamic, high performing team at the forefront of disruptive Powertrain innovation.

Responsibilities:

  • Controls systems Leader within the Fuel Cell EV truck Engineering team.

  • Coordinate internal and external groups in the process of control strategy definition and documentation.

  • Champion Design for Six Sigma.

  • Develop complex control strategies using software in the loop, hardware in the loop, and system testing.

  • Leverage internal product development processes to ensure high quality results, manage progress and report updates.

  • Manage implementation of product changes by tracking project schedule, budget, and functional requirements throughout the entire life of the project.

  • Support prototype build and product launch at our vehicle assembly plant (Renton, WA).

  • Work closely with PACCAR divisions.

  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with Mechanical and Electrical engineers, Manufacturing engineers, and other professionals to ensure a right-first-time #Job 1.

  • Manage multiple priorities and goals simultaneously.

  • Travel potentially up to 10%. Primarily based at our Kirkland, WA Divisional Head Quarters.

    Qualifications & Skills:

  • Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field; P.E. license preferred.

  • 5+ years’ experience in control system design, signal processing, PID loops and dynamic system modeling.

  • Understanding of automotive communication protocols (J1939, CAN, KWP-2000, UDS).

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of Vector CANalyzer, ATI calibration tools, and data collection tools.

  • Able to analyze vehicle performance in MATLAB/Simulink via modeling and data analysis.

  • Basic knowledge of Pro/E or other similar solid modeling software.

  • Familiarity with DFSS and project management methods/tools.

  • Manage costs, time and resources and have strong people skills.

  • Fully conversant with MS Office, Power BI, and similar application software.

  • Capable to work under own initiative, project manage the Controls workload, with minimal day-to-day supervision.

    Additional Job Board Information

    At PACCAR, we value talent and promote growth and development. We carefully consider numerous compensation factors including your education, training, or experience. The salary range for Controls Engineer-Advanced Development, Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle is $93,000-$145,500 annually. This position is also eligible for a holiday gift. Additionally, this role is eligible for the full range of benefit options listed above.
