Summary:

The Chief of Police performs various functions in keeping the police department running efficiently and manages the day-to-day operations of the Police Department and Security Unit.

Responsibilities

All patients, visitors and staff are served by providing 24 hour electronic and physical observation of the hospital campus in an effort to provide a secure working environment. Ensures that all hospital safety and security, policies and procedure are conformed with on a day to day basis.

EDUCATION

Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminal justice, police science, public administration, or a related field. Matriculation into a bachelor’s degree within one year of hire. Master’s degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of progressive responsible supervisory and administrative law enforcement experience; including three (3) years of experience equivalent to a Deputy Chief or equivalent position, or five (5) years of experience equivalent to a Captain, Commander, or equivalent position.

LICENSURE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION

  • Must be able to obtain Company Police Officer Certification with the NC Department of Justice, Training and Standards Division, Office of Company Police.

  • Must possess or be able to obtain the International Association of Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) certification.

OTHER SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession of Police Officer certification from the appropriate state training board may be required.

  • Knowledge of modern principles, practices, and techniques of police, organization, and operations

  • Ability to manage and direct both police and security personnel working as a team

  • Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of department goals.

  • Ability to interpret and apply applicable Federal, State, and local laws.

  • Strong computer software skills, including Word, Microsoft Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, internet, and electronic files Strong knowledge of and ability to implement modern methods, practices, and principles of police investigation, organization, and administration

  • Strong knowledge of personnel management, supervision, and business administration for effective leadership of the police department

  • Strong ability to review the operations of the Police Department and Security Unit, discover weaknesses, and effect improvement

  • Strong decision-making skills to be able to make the right decision quickly within established guidelines and protocols

  • Strong ability to enforce rules and adhere to established guidelines and protocols

  • Detail-oriented with strong understanding of report writing and accounting practices and principles

  • Strong crisis resolution ability o Ability to keep relevant certifications, licenses, and all in-service requirements current

  • Strong communication skills, to write and speak fluently in English.
