KETCHIKAN INDIAN COMMUNITY JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Field Crew Leader Status: Non-Exempt

Department: Cultural Resources Status: Full-Time, Seasonal, Temporary

Supervisor: Cultural Resources Director Supervisory: Yes

Purpose

Ketchikan Indian Community (KIC) job descriptions are a management tool to help organize duties and provide employees with the employer's expectations with regard to a specific job classification. Job Summary:

The incumbent will be the Crew Leader working on stream and forest restoration in a forest setting. This is a supervisory position leading up to five crew members. During the first weeks, the Crew Leader will provide safety training, chainsaw use, hand tools use, etc. The next two weeks of work will be in the Ketchikan area in a forest setting, where trail maintenance and removing invasive species will be conducted. The next two weeks will be at a remote work site conducting stream restoration. Overtime (Time and a half) is expected while working at a remote site and conducting stream restoration. Camping at a remote forest site for 2 weeks is required. The Crew Leader must be willing to work hard in a physically demanding position.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The Field Crew Leader will spend the first two weeks supervising and training Field Crew Members about safety, chainsaw use, hand tools, use, etc.

Field Crew will be working the next 2 weeks directing Crew members in a forest setting, conducting trail maintenance and removing invasive species, and working at a remote site conducting stream restoration. Camping at the site for 2 weeks is required.

All field crews will be expected to exercise sound judgment while working in the forest.

This is a supervisory position, leading up to five crew members, and will be expected to work hard in a physically demanding position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS:

Must be 18 years of age to apply;

Ability and experience supervising general laborers. Proven ability to create a team atmosphere is a plus.

Ability to take and provide verbal instruction and complete assigned projects by established deadlines;

Must have eyesight and attention suitable to assess site safety and proximity to other workers.

Must have an eye for safety and the ability to ensure crew members take all safety precautions and wear PPE.

Familiarity with chainsaws, winches, and other hand tools is a plus.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

Must be able to hear. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to use hands to finger, handle or operate tools, reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch; and taste or smell. Each of the listed activities also requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, and stooping in a forest setting and routinely lifting, walking, and carrying objects up to fifty (50) pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Crew members will work and live in a remote forest setting. This is a supervisory position for general laborers, and applicants must be able to walk through the woods while carrying 30-50 pounds and lifting, pushing, grabbing, manipulating, and pulling heavy objects.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Age Requirement

Must be 18 years of age to apply.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Licensure:

Possess a current valid State of Alaska driver's license with a record acceptable to KIC's Insurance carrier.

REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to work overtime (time and a half and camp at the job site in a remote setting for 2 weeks is required).
