We are currently offering elevated SIGN-ON BONUSES for all full-time Surgical Technologist positions! The amount of the sign-on bonus is dependent upon your years of Surgical Technology experience.

  • 0-1 years of experience: 2-year commitment $10,000; 3-year commitment $12,000

  • 1-2 years of experience: 2-year commitment $12,000; 3-year commitment $17,000

  • 2+ years of experience: 2-year commitment $15,000; 3-year commitment $25,000

*Current UPMC employees are not eligible for the sign-on bonus program unless transferring to a different job family.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure proper labeling and distribution of medications to surgeons in accordance with policies.

  • Prepare operating rooms by arranging surgical instruments, equipment, drapes, and solutions.

  • Set up both sterile and non-sterile equipment, ensuring functionality.

  • Assist during surgeries by efficiently passing instruments, holding retractors, and performing tasks under surgeon supervision.

  • Aid in specimen preparation, care, disposal, and dressing application.

  • Assist surgical team with donning sterile attire.

  • Assist in patient transfer to recovery and clean and restock operating rooms post-surgery.

  • Prepare patients for surgery, including washing, shaving, and ensuring aseptic conditions.

  • Maintain a clean and safe environment, including vigilance for safety hazards and adherence to aseptic techniques.

Pennsylvania (PA) House Bill 81, effective from 12/27/2020, outlines the following requirements for surgical technologists:

  • Qualifications:

  • Completion of a program sponsored by nationally recognized institutional or programmatic accreditation with certification maintenance.

  • Completion of appropriate military training program with certification maintenance.

  • Maintenance of certification from an accredited program.

  • Employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility on or before 12/27/2020.

  • Employment as a surgical technologist at another healthcare facility two years before 12/27/2020.

  • Continuing Education:

  • Compliance with continuing education requirements specified by the credentialing organization for certification.

  • For individuals not certified, completion of 30 hours of continuing education every two years.

  • Access to Medications:

  • Limited to distributing medications to the nurse.

  • Grandfather Clause:

  • Individuals employed as surgical technologists by a healthcare facility before 12/27/2020 or employed as such at another healthcare facility two years before 12/27/2020 are exempt from certification requirements.

  • New Graduates Provision:

  • New graduates from accredited programs can work for six months prior to certification but must be certified within six months of program completion.

Regarding licensure, certifications, and clearances, CPR based on AHA standards including both didactic and skills demonstration components is required within 30 days of hire. Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Technologist Surgery Certified (TSC) is required within six months of program completion. An exception allows healthcare facilities to employ individuals without certification if efforts to recruit certified surgical technologists have been made and documented.
