Kalamazoo County Government Accountant I, II or III in Kalamazoo, Michigan

GENERAL SUMMARY

The purpose of this job is to perform entry-level professional accounting functions involved in the maintenance and review of departmental or Countywide fiscal accounts. Maintain a complete set of accounting books, including journals and general ledgers for assigned funds, grants, and/or fiscal accounts. Post or ensure posting is made to proper accounts, maintain accounting controls, and periodically adjust and close accounts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains a complete set of accounting books, including journals, general ledgers, and subsidiary financial records for accounts in assigned areas. Maintains accounting controls on various books and accounts and periodically adjusts and closes accounts in assigned areas. Utilizes current Countywide and/or department-specific software to complete assignments.
  • Monitors and reviews grant funds, ensuring proper allocation and compliance with grant requirements, regulations, and reporting deadlines.
  • Classifies records of financial transactions and posts or ensures that posting is made to the appropriate general or subsidiary account. Analyzes assigned departments' financial and accounting transactions to determine the feasibility of changes in existing accounting methods and procedures.
  • Review invoices received from various County activities to determine proper billing and checks for completeness and accuracy of mathematical computations before authorizing billings for payment.
  • Review and audit expenditure vouchers and check for correctness and accuracy of funds, accounts, and mathematical computations before payment.
  • Prepares daily, bi-weekly, quarterly, annual, and other periodic financial and statistical reports necessary for cost analysis, preparation of budget statements, or other evaluation of a departmental account or fund for review by the supervisor.
  • Confers with representatives of other County departments regarding accounting problems for assigned departmental accounts and funds to correct errors in procedures used or account figures provided.
  • Perform related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS- Accountant I -- Starting Salary (107) $24.02/hr.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, business administration, finance, economics, or a closely related field
  • At least 1 to 3 years of related work experience, such as governmental accounting, budget management, reporting, financial forecasting, etc.
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS- Accountant II -- Starting Salary (108) $26.90/hr.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, business administration, finance, economics, or a closely related field
  • At least 3 to 5 years of related work experience, such as governmental accounting, budget management, reporting, financial forecasting, etc.
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS- Accountant III -- Starting Salary (109) $30.13/hr.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, business administration, finance, economics, or a closely related field

At least 5 to 7 years of related work experience, such as governmental accounting, budget management, reporting, financial forecasting, etc.
