Position Specific Description
NextEra Energy is currently seeking a Process Controls Engineer who can apply diversified knowledge of engineering principles and process control practices to a broad variety of assignments related to power generation and energy storage. Employees in this role have the responsibility of specifying control system platform requirements, developing control strategies and managing the implementation of process control functional logic and HMI execution.
Job Overview
Employees in this technical role provide engineering expertise and guidance conceptualizing, interpreting, and executing assignments related to continuous control of energy conversion and storage processes.
The Process Control and SCADA Engineer champions control solution platform development, management of control standards and modularization of functional logic and graphics. The engineer guides and/or assists EPC firms performing controls related planning and execution for new construction and existing sites. The controls engineer supports work scoping and installation package development for renewable process control software/hardware solutions. The controls engineer typically supports commissioning activities remotely, implements lessons-learned into functional logic plans and work execution plans for project implementation through turnover to operations.
The successful candidate will have a sense of accountability and urgency required to make informed decisions regarding safety, regulatory compliance, system integrity, and engineering complexity under limited supervision.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Plans and develops engineering projects which have important impact on major company programs
Acts as subject matter expert to individuals within and outside the organization with responsibility to act independently regarding technical matters pertaining to individual's field
Completes assignments given in broad terms concerning general objectives and limitations
Provides technical support to project developers and peer engineering disciplines
Incorporates feedback from operating engineers for failure mitigation and quality improvement
Performs system and factory acceptance testing for new controls and system mods and upgrades
Provides technical leadership in the functional specification, design, implementation and testing of control solutions
Ensures the organization’s SCADA networking, cybersecurity and operating requirements are addressed
Interfaces with 3rd party contractors and vendors to ensure products and services meet project requirements
Assists Project Engineers during system stand-up and commissioning
Ensure designs comply with Transmission Owner requirements with focus on ERCOT NOGRR 245 and NOGRR 255
Performs other job-related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Technical / Functional Excellence/Learning
Effective Written Communications
Effective Verbal Communications
Working experience with functional logic development for continuous process control, PID loops and/or protection
Working experience with networked based communication and control architectures
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical or related STEM field
Experience: 7+ years
Desired Qualifications
Experience with Modbus, OPC, and DNP3 protocols
Experience with functional safety standards e.g. IEC 61511/61508 or equivalent protection concepts
Experience with DCS/PLC based control implementations e.g. Modicon/Schneider, Ovation
Working knowledge of power fundamentals and voltage control
Substation RTU, protection and control experience
Working technical integration experience
Ability to evaluate risk in PLC/DCS control code, recommend improvements in best practices, and manage the base code to ensure safe and optimal operation.
Proficient knowledge of Six-sigma and engineering design practices
