Job Information

JEA Paralegal in Jacksonville, Florida

Under general supervision, prepare and proofread legal documents, drafting contract language, researching legal precedent, investigating facts, as well as the development, analysis of rules, and adherence to policies and procedures. Regular contact with people in other work groups and frequently with individuals in internal leadership roles is required to plan, coordinate, or advise on work efforts or to resolve problems.

  • Assist with all facets of preparing attorneys for depositions, hearings, mediations, and arbitrations, including but not limited to, preparing binders, retrieving documents, organizing facts, booking conference rooms, organizing travel arrangements, and coordinating logistics.
  • Assist attorneys in administrative tasks including coordinating meetings, arranging for continuing legal education, maintaining calendars, and entering billable hours in the Office of General Counsel tracking database.
  • Assist Chief Legal Officer in reviewing, maintaining, and preparing annual budget.
  • Research, gather, and analyze statutes, decisions, articles, codes, case law, and other legal data.
  • Retrieve information from electronic discovery databases and run searches.
  • Update internal databases regarding various cases and requests.
  • Compile and provide initial review of legal invoices and submitting them for payment.
  • Draft basic legal documents, memoranda, and correspondence that will be sent to third parties such as vendors, contractors, attorneys, or government agencies.
  • Prepare, maintain, and close out various case files, and prepare exhibits and trial notebooks.
  • Perform other job-related work as assigned.

_KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES_:

Knowledge of:

  • Electronic filing in local, state, and federal jurisdictions (i.e. Clerk Online Resource ePortal (CORE), Electronic Case Filing (ECF)).
  • Public records and Sunshine laws.
  • Legal research programs (i.e. Westlaw, Lexis-Nexis).
  • Legal procedures, functions, and terminology.

Skill in:

  • Operation of computer hardware and software including word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Establishing and maintaining information, record, document, and file systems.
  • Proofreading materials for contextual, grammatical typographical or spelling errors.

**Ability to:

**

  • Communicate with attorneys of the Office of General Counsel, other law firms, and their support staff and paralegals.
  • Answer routine questions regarding contract, public record, and legal issues.
  • Examine contracts and other legal documents to ensure completeness and accuracy, as well as conformance to applicable laws, rules, precedents.
  • Assist in gathering, consolidating and preparing budget data and related materials.
  • Prioritize work assignments for completeness within time constraints.
  • Schedule and coordinate meetings for attorneys and maintain their calendars.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships inside and outside JEA.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Operate standard office equipment and software applications; type a minimum of 40 words per minute.

Education: High School Diploma

AND

Experience: Five (5) years of paralegal experience with a law firm, including five (5) years of experience with electronic filing in Electronic filing in local, state, and federal jurisdictions (i.e. Clerk Online Resource ePortal (CORE), Electronic Case Filing (ECF))

OR

An equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training.

License/Certifications/Registrations:

A valid driver's license is required prior to employment and must be maintained during employment in this classification.

Paralegal certification is preferred.

This is a hybrid role supporting the Office of General Counsel in Jacksonville, FL. The salary range for this position is $70,040.00 - $95,618.00. Salary will vary based on education, experience, skills, and abilities.
