Conservation Legacy Community Volunteer Ambassador – Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument in Jackson, Mississippi

Position Details:

Stewards Individual Placements, a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train a diverse group of emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities.

The CVA will mostly be focused on recruitment and retention. They will be assisting our VIP coordinator with outreach events and organizing volunteer trainings at the Evers home and Myrlie's Garden. The CVA will work closely with our volunteers to prepare them for interpreting the home. The CVA will attend necessary trainings and workshops. Once we get volunteers, the CVA will work with them to prepare them for our Trails and Rails program.

Site Description

The Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument is located in Jackson, Mississippi. We operate out of two locations: one being our administrative office and the other being the Evers Home. The CVA will spend the majority of their time at our admin office, unless they are doing outreach and recruitment. Currently the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home does not have any volunteers, but the CVA will work closely with our VIP coordinator to assist with recruitment and retention.

Position Responsibilities:

· Work with VIP coordinator to recruit volunteers.

· Strategize with VIP coordinator on best recruitment tactics.

· Develop relationships with other volunteer organizations in Jackson.

· Help train volunteers.

· Work alongside the volunteers at the Evers’ home and garden.

· Assist with volunteers at Public Lands Day at Myrlie’s Garden.

· Attend necessary VIP trainings.

· Work with interpretation team to learn about how we want volunteers to interpret the Evers’ home.

· Work VIP coordinator to manage volunteer’s schedules.

CVA Minimum Requirements:

· Team player

· Community oriented

· Familiar with the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement

· Friendly

· Not afraid to take initiative.

· Participate in the CVA National Early Service Training in late November 2024 (date TBD)

· Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.

· Be 18-30 years old at time of service (veterans up to 35 years old)

· High School Diploma/GED

· Pass fingerprint-based FBI, state criminal, and a national sex offender checks.

· Be able to provide proof of a driver’s license and complete a MVR check

· Must be over 21 years old or have had license for at least 3 years to be insured in this position

Preferred Qualifications:

· Local applicants (Jackson + surrounding areas)

· Effective communication skills (verbal and digitally)

· Experience working with community organizations

· Experience building partnerships

· Familiarity with social media

· Eager to learn

Additional Information:

The Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument is unique because we are located in an active neighborhood. The neighbors are a major part of Medgar and Myrlie's story and legacy. We work closely with the community and the neighbors to interpret their story and learn from them.

The CVA will have the opportunity to work with prominent figures in the Jackson community (such as veterans of the Movement) and important historic sites such as the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. The Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home collaborates with all kinds of organizations and community partners due to our story, the impact of Medgar Evers, and our location.

Benefits:
  • $600/week living stipend.

  • $150/week in housing allowance, if housing is not provided.

  • The position is eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award $6,895.00 (pre-tax) upon successful completion of the program
