Agricultural Research Service Maintenance Mechanic Helper in Ithaca, New York

Summary This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service, Northeast Area in Ithaca, New York. In this position, you will perform custodial duties and assists facilities personnel by performing the simpler more routine duties of the trades as required. Responsibilities Operates motor vehicles over public roads to transport supplies, materials, or equipment. Submits and maintains tracking of service work order records for location facility repairs. Works under the supervision of the Facility Operations Specialist who provides instructions on assignments. Assists with lubricating motors, changing belts and replacing filters on equipment and systems. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement: 06/25/2024 Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a Maintenance Mechanic Helperwithout more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Applicants who do not meet the SCREEN OUT ELEMENT will not be given further consideration. Physical Effort Moderately heavy physical effort is required when using ladders and scaffolds to clean walls, ceilings, windows, etc.; operating powered equipment; and carrying materials. Work requires continual standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and occasionally lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds. Using normal safety practices, only minor risk of injury is expected. Working Conditions Work is performed not only inside but also in greenhouses and outside in all kinds of weather. The inside work may occur in areas that are dusty, drafty, and noisy. The equipment, tools, and tasks involved at this level frequently require extreme care and use of safety gloves, ear plugs, safety glasses, or respirators to avoid serious injuries. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education This position does not have an education qualification requirement. This position may be eligible to telework up to four days per week, based upon the duties of the position.
