Overview

  • This is a third shift primarily sleep position with hours of 12 am - 8 am. At times, you may have to be awake if an attendee needs assistance or support. There will always be an On-Call Supervisor for assistance if needed.
  • EXPLORE is a residential camp for young adults with disabilities. EXPLORE Counselors play an active role in providing a positive experience to young adults aged 14 - 21 with disabilities visiting the University of Iowa Campus.
  • This position is for two different summer programs (please see dates below). One does not need to be available for both to apply, however, strong consideration will be given to those that are available to work both programs.

Counselor Responsibilities

  • Report directly to the Program Director.
  • Perform duties assigned by the Program Director.
  • Report all incidents in and around the institute to the On-Call Supervisor.
  • Report to the On-Call Supervisor any cases beyond your disciplinary efforts (e.g., when students refuse to cooperate).
  • Ensure that attendees are in their rooms during the overnight hours - this includes a room check at 12 am and 3 am.
  • Interact directly with attendees in the residence hall.
  • Provide support to attendees in the residence hall, including promoting effective study and living habits.
  • Supervise students to get up and ready for the day's activities such as breakfast and field trips.
  • Provide support and supervision during breakfast.
  • Model and encourage acceptable social behaviors.
  • Establish and maintain rapport with attendees. Serve as a role model in areas of personal appearance, communication, interpersonal skills, decision-making, and responsibility.
  • Model and instruct attendees on how to meet behavior expectations according to social norms.
  • Assist attendees with concerns that may arise and aid when needed.
  • Help attendees develop self-confidence and positive attitudes.
  • Implement and adhere to university policies and procedures.
  • Accurately record and submit hours worked.
  • Assist with program opening and closing activities if available.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Availability to work overnight.
  • A minimum of a high school education and completed one year in college or the equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a team .
  • Display a positive attitude.
  • Ability to think quickly in fast-paced situations.
  • Demonstrate patience, organization, and have a desire to see others succeed
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check..

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with young adults with disabilities is strongly encouraged.
  • Previous and/or current Resident Assistant (RA) experience.
  • Degree or seeking a degree in the field of education or related field.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid certified.
  • Bloodborne Pathogen certified.

Work Hours

  • June 3 - June 5: Mandatory Training
  • June 9 - June 13: EXPLORE Camp (adults and minors)
  • July 7 - July 12: UI REACH EXPLORE Camp (adults 18 +)

Training and Background Check Requirements

  • Criminal Background Check upon hire
  • Minors on Campus online training
  • Bloodborne Pathogen training
  • Attend trainings that occur June 3 - 5

Rate of Pay

  • $17 per hour
