The Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine invites applications for a 100% open rank non-tenure clinical or tenure track Cardiac Imaging faculty position within the Department of Radiology.

This individual would be charged with leadership of our cardiac MR and CT imaging program, including clinical care, research, and education, in close collaboration with faculty from the Division of Cardiology. The program is jointly administered with the Division of Cardiology, with whom there is a long track record of successful partnership. The Department of Radiology is responsible for the operation of the CT and MR scanners, supervision and training of the technologists, and supervision and training of the 3D processing lab technologists. Radiology is also responsible for image interpretation for half of the clinical CT and MR cardiac studies. Radiology and Cardiology are jointly sponsoring a Cardiac Imaging fellowship for individuals from Cardiology or Radiology backgrounds and this position would be responsible for this fellowship in partnership with colleagues from Cardiology.

This position will join our Cardiothoracic Imaging Division. Applicants must be board certified by the American Board of Radiology or eligible and have completed a formal fellowship or equivalent training in cardiac Imaging. In addition to clinical activities, teaching and call duties are shared across the division.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in research activities in collaboration with established researchers in the Iowa Institute of Biomedical Imaging (IIBI), the Advanced Pulmonary Physiomic Imaging Lab (APPIL) and the Abboud Cardiovascular Research Center. The IIBI is overseen by Radiology and includes 1.5T, 3T and 7T research scanners.

About the Department of Radiology:

The Radiology Department includes sixty two staff physicians, fourteen fellows, fifteen Ph.D. researchers, and thirty-six residents. The Department operates six clinical 64 to 128 and dual source MDCT scanners. We expect a photon counting CT scanner by March, 2022. There are six clinical MR scanners including a 3T. Construction is completed for a PET/MR, which is expected by Spring of 2024.

The Department has a strong research record in imaging, in particular involving neuroscience and pulmonary applications in addition to PET/theranostics. The Department is also responsible for the Iowa Institute of Biomedical Imaging (IIBI). This facility includes research-dedicated imaging equipment including GE 7T MR950 and 3T Premier whole body MRI scanners, Siemens FORCE CT scanner, GE Discovery PET/CT scanner, and a GE 7T MR901 small animal MRI scann r, and Polarian 129Xe polarizer.

The lower level of the IIBI houses the Small Animal Imaging Core (SAIC). The purpose of the SAIC is to provide instrumentation and technical services for non-invasive anatomical and physiological imaging of small animals (mice, rats, rabbits) and other biological samples. The IIBI brings together more than 40 faculty members from colleges of medicine and engineering within the University of Iowa. Learn more about the IIBI at

https://www.iibi.uiowa.edu. The facility has 9 imaging bays with flexible barrier/non barrier room conversion, five equipment rooms, an image analysis room and four radioactive animal housing rooms. The facility is immediately adjacent to a large vivarium with over 49,000 SF of barrier and non-barrier rooms and a behavioral testing facility.

About the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics:

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) is a state-of-the-art 800 bed tertiary care center that annually admits more than 36,000 patients for in-patient hospital care. In fiscal year 2017, we received nearly 60,000 emergency department visits. We represent more than 200 outpatient clinics and care areas and accommodated just over one million clinic visits at our main campus and community and outreach clinics. UIHC is HIMSS level 7 certified in both inpatient and outpatient care as well as a 2014 HIMSS Enterprise Davies Award Recipient.

UIHC is Iowa's only comprehensive academic medical center and regional referral center. The UIHC Stead Family Children's Hospital opened in 2017and is Iowa's only comprehensive children's hospital.

Education Requirement:

MD/PhD, MD, or equivalent degree

Required Qualifications:

  1. Board certified by the American Board of Radiology or eligible.
  2. Fellowship training or equivalent training in Cardiac imaging.
  3. Excellent verbal, written and intercommunication skills with clinicians, patients and trainees.
  4. Experience and ability to foster a welcoming and respectful workplace environment while recognizing personal differences and ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and respectful manner.

Highly Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Management experience, specifically in building or managing clinical services including the supervision of technologists and other staff.
  2. Documented track record of multi-disciplinary collaboration.
  3. Expertise in either post graduate medical education or cardiac imaging research, or both.
