About the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI):

The Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired has substantial knowledge and experience in educating students to master the core curriculum and expanded curriculum that teaches them how to navigate their physical, social, and personal worlds. Our expertise is accessed and used by local educators to improve the education of all of Indiana's children who are blind or have low vision. Because of its strong reputation, the school attracts highly qualified administrators and educators, and students from other states whose parents move to Indiana so that their children can attend.

ISBVI is in the process of implementing a strategic plan to transition to a new, state-of-the-art campus.

Salary:

This position starts at $17.54 per hour. Salary may be commensurate with education and job experience.

Role Overview:

The Indiana Educational Resource Center provides educational materials in accessible formats to school-age students with visual impairments.

The Shipping and Receiving Clerk works during the summer to receive and prepare specialized instructional materials, aids, and equipment for the school library collection. You will also receive and prepare materials to be shipped to schools throughout Indiana.

The position is located at IPS School 83 on East 42nd Street.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Open boxes and inspect contents for damage.

  • Sort contents. Clean equipment and textbooks.

  • Organize returned boxes by school district.

  • Identify and repair damaged volumes and equipment using established repair methods.

  • Organize braille and large print volumes into numerical order, sort them into bundles, and prepare a shelf tag. Place on cart and send to shipping clerk for check-in.

  • Retrieve inventory from shelves using computer-generated lists and prepare materials for shipment.

  • Ship braille, large print, and equipment per IERC shipping procedure.

  • Access inventory and shipping data from the automated library system and prepare packing slips as needed.

  • Label new inventory, textbooks, aids, and equipment.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • Able to communicate effectively in English.

  • Ability to use office equipment, including binding, copier, bundler, and computer.

  • Working knowledge of MS Word and MS Excel computer software.

  • Ability to organize effectively, perform more than one task at a time with minimal errors, and maintain a high level of accuracy in details.

  • Ability to problem solve effectively.

  • Ability to organize workload for maximum work efficiency, perform duties with minimal input from immediate supervisor, and meet tight timelines.

  • Ability and willingness to work in close proximity and get along well with other members of the staff.

  • Demonstrate high levels of performance by making good work judgments; planning and organizing work thoroughly, and being efficient.

  • Able to maintain high quality of work and accept responsibility.

  • Ability to follow instructions accurately.

  • Ability to function well while under stress.

  • Effectively and efficiently coordinating work with others.

  • Demonstrate ability to observe work hours and maintain good attendance.

  • Able to comply with rules, meet schedules, accept changes, maintain work areas in a neat and orderly manner, and take initiative.

  • Ability to lift heavy objects.

  • Observe safety precautions in carrying out assigned duties.

  • Able to handle confidential records and other matters judiciously.

    Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

    This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
