Environmental Scientist (Ecologist/Botanist) - ( 240000LS )

Description

Stantec is seeking an Environmental Scientist (Ecologist, Botanist) for our Indianapolis, Indiana location. This position will conduct environmental sampling including vegetation and hydrology for monitoring and delineation purposes, data analysis, and reporting. Other responsibilities will vary based on the candidate’s skill set and project needs. These responsibilities may include additional ecological service site assessments, such as wildlife surveys and ground water sampling.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Knowledge of or experience with wetland and stream communities

  • Knowledge of or experience with wetland, stream and habitat monitoring sampling methodologies

  • Knowledge of or experience with wetland and stream delineations field assessment including hydric soil indicators

  • Data recording and reporting for delineation per the applicable USACE standardized methodologies

  • Use of GPS for field mapping and desktop review

  • Aerial interpretation

  • Able and willing to assist our restoration and maintenance teams with field work for quality control

  • Opportunities for water quality, fish, and wildlife possible

  • Opportunities to assist in conducting groundwater sampling

  • Recording data and observations in an accurate and well-organized manner

  • Preparing technical reports detailing environmental assessments and monitoring activities

  • Complete autonomously to semi-autonomously assigned tasks

  • Completing office tasks such as data management, analysis and interpretation; and report preparation

  • Completing and adhering to Health and Safety and QA/QC protocols

  • Interacting and communicating effectively

  • Be a contributing and productive team member

  • Participating in team and independent based work

  • Ability to safely work outdoors in all types of weather and terrain conditions typical of the Midwest

  • Travel may be required

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Strong plant identification skills including wetland species

  • Knowledge and facility with appropriate Midwest botanical references

  • Must have field botany skills and ability to conduct field work, at times for long hours or under strenuous circumstances

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Dedication to successful project execution incorporating critical thinking, ability to work within regulatory guidance documents, and adhere to high quality and ethical standards.

  • Follows safe work practices

  • Basic or above average understanding of technical writing skills

  • Positive, flexible, team-oriented approach, with the willingness and desire to work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team

  • Effective time management and follow-through, with the ability to simultaneously work on and potentially lead multiple tasks subject to project deadlines

  • Strongly detail oriented and able to work as part of a team and independently

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Word & Excel

  • Ability to travel to work locations with some overnight travel capacity

  • Flexibility to work in office and field environments

  • Valid Driver’s License

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in botany, plant ecology, wetlands ecology, riparian ecology, conservation biology, or related science

  • Minimum 1 years’ work experience; or an equivalent combination of education (e.g. advanced degree) and experience.

  • Capable of working in an office environment (computer based work for reports, data, project tasks) and performing field work throughout the year.
