Amentum Machinist III in Ijamsville, Maryland

Amentum is actively searching for an experienced Senior Machinist to support our on-site prototyping / limited production run machine shop in Ijamsville, MD.

We have multiple CNC lathes and vertical CNC mills with a complement of manual machines. We do primarily prototype work for DoD end users with many of our products actively deployed around the world for many years. We are a quality focused environment that takes pride in the execution of our efforts and we are looking for someone who will help continue this tradition of excellence. work with the safety of yourself and others in mind at all times

Job Responsibilities:

  • Fabricate parts for prototype equipment, working from complicated engineering drawings, sketches and 3D models, written or verbal instructions with the capability of holding strict tolerances

  • Interpret sketches and 3D models for a variety of machined parts and assist other shop employees and engineers in the assembly of prototype parts, equipment and test fixtures

  • Use hand tools such as drills, sanders, and grinders

  • Interpret written instructions and specifications

  • Plan and layout of work; using a variety of machinist hand tools and precision measuring instruments

  • Set up and operate machine tools both manually and numerically controlled

  • Machine metal parts of various compositions (metal, plastic, etc.) to close tolerances

  • Make standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds of machining

  • Select standard materials, parts, and equipment required

Minimum Requirements

  • Vocational/technical training beyond high school and at least 7 years of job-related experience or equivalent

  • Ability to interpret and generate CNC code using CAM software for complex geometry

  • Expertise in the setup, tooling selection, and operation of CNC and manual milling machines, lathes and other machine shop auxiliary machinery

  • Ability to interpret CAD models and drawings for estimation of labor and materials to produce complex assemblies

  • US citizenship

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Gibbs brand CAM software

  • Familiarity with machine shop fabrication processes and machines (mills, lathes, CAM software, drills, EDM, fiberglass layup, mold design)

  • Team player, willing to work together to get the job done right.

  • Good time management and ability to prioritize tasking based upon provided schedules

  • Ability to estimate time required to complete tasking

  • Willingness to attend customer meetings and visit sites throughout the continental United States to take firsthand measurements for later incorporation into project work

  • Monitor quality control processes to ensure completed parts meet all specifications

  • Ability to obtain a secret security clearance
