Join the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation as an East Region Utility Craftsman, based in Idaho Falls.

As a versatile team player, you'll contribute to construction, trades, maintenance, and more, reporting directly to the Recreation Site Maintenance Foreman.

Your role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, from constructing diverse structures like buildings, bridges, and hangars to handling remodeling tasks. Operating heavy equipment, interpreting blueprints, and conducting surveys will be second nature. Your skill set will extend to trades such as concrete work, carpentry, and steel erection. Plumbing, electrical work, landscaping, and equipment maintenance will also fall within your expertise. Stepping into a leadership role, you'll supervise project assistants, maintain meticulous records, and provide valuable insights to other jurisdictions. Your attention to detail ensures excellence in every task you tackle.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Construction:

  • constructs buildings, storage sheds, garages, bridges, airport runways and hangars, and similar facilities and structures;

  • remodels offices and buildings by building walls, installing sheetrock and siding, painting, and any other duty required to complete the project;

  • operates equipment such as front-end loader, backhoe, dump truck, tractor/trailer transport, forklift, roller, cranes, scissors trucks, and bridge inspection equipment;

  • designs items to be built or fabricated; lays out, cuts, welds, and fabricates steel plate and beams;

  • reads plans and blueprints;

  • uses transit and level and runs stakes for surveys;

  • may install navigation aids, runway lighting system,s and non-directional beacons.

Trades/maintenance:

  • builds concrete forms, and places, finishes and repairs concrete; lays bricks and blocks;

  • builds and remodels wooden structures and special carpentry items;

  • erects and repairs steel members;

  • lays carpet; installs doors, jambs and locks, and closures; builds fences;

  • maintains and repairs plumbing fixtures, irrigation systems and pump stations, pipes, sinks, lavatories, septic tanks and electrical wiring, lights, ballasts, switches, and receptacles;

  • plumbs natural and propane gas lines;

  • grades parking areas;

  • landscapes areas;

  • performs minor tune-ups and field repairs on small engines;

  • greases, oils, and services equipment.

Miscellaneous.

  • keeps records and reports on the progress of projects;

  • functions as lead worker over project assistants;

  • completes performance reports of staff assigned;

  • draws plans for landscaping and construction use;

  • patches/repairs asphalt surfaces;

  • provides advice to other jurisdictions regarding the maintenance and construction of bridges, airports, and similar facilities;

  • establishes traffic control plans;

  • performs inspections of airports and construction sites.

  • May work with hazardous materials.

Additional Information:

  • This position may require you to travel away from home for extended periods of time, work in all weather conditions, and/or wear a respirator for prolonged periods of time.

  • This position may operate on a four ten-hour shift schedule, or five eight-hour shifts, based on department needs.

  • This position also involves physical activities associated with construction work such as lifting and carrying items weighing approximately 100 pounds, bending and stooping, and working at heights of up to approximately 50 feet.

  • Depending on department needs, may require registration as a plumbing or electrical apprentice.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Good knowledge of construction and building trades work. Typically gained by specific education or work experience demonstrated at the journey level (approximately 4 years) in carpentry and/or concrete. This experience must be supplemented by knowledge, education, or experience in two other trade skill areas such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or related.

  • Experience operating and maintaining equipment associated with construction and building trades and grounds maintenance. Typically gained by experience operating light equipment such as trucks, mowers, tractors, or farm equipment, and performing normal maintenance of equipment such as checking oil, water, fluids, and servicing.

  • Experience placing and finishing concrete; performing rough and finish carpentry; performing maintenance plumbing and maintenance electrical work; and reading/interpreting plans and blueprints. Typically gained by at least four years of work experience in residential or commercial construction at the journey level placing and finishing concrete, performing rough and finish carpentry, performing maintenance plumbing and maintenance electrical work, AND reading/interpreting plans and blueprints.

  • Experience using and maintaining construction and building trades hand and power tools. Typically gained by experience using and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools commonly associated with construction trades.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION SPECIALTIES

  • Possession of a valid driver's license.

  • Incumbents must obtain a commercial driver's license within 60 days of hire and retain it for the duration of employment.
