Lifeguard

The City of Idaho Falls is accepting applications for the position of Lifeguard for the Wes Deist Aquatic Center. Under the

supervision of the Aquatics Manager and Aquatics Supervisor, the Lifeguard will be responsible for the safety of all patrons

in the building.

Essential Functions

Monitors activities at the pool to prevent accidents; rescues swimmers in danger of drowning; administers First Aid;

cautions swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards; enforces and adheres to pool rules and regulations;

follows emergency action plan and procedures established in the event of an emergency; maintains order in the pool and

adjoining areas.

Inspects facilities for cleanliness; completes general pool cleaning and maintenance duties; responsible for the availability

and safekeeping of emergency equipment (rescue tubes, backboard, signs and other equipment); determines chlorine

content and pH value of water, using water testing kit, and record readings.

Provides general information on pool operation to patrons; teaches swimming lessons.

Will also need to attend mandatory meetings and training sessions as scheduled.

Minimum Qualifications

No Experience Required.

Previous experience and/or involvement in recreation programs, life-guarding or swimming preferred.

Knowledge of pool equipment and maintenance; knowledge of lifesaving methods and procedures, including first aid and

standard resuscitation measures; knowledge of rules and regulations governing conduct of the public at pools; knowledge

of swimming pool sanitation and chlorination systems.

Skilled in the application of lifesaving techniques; skilled in Front Crawl, Breast Stroke, Elementary Back Stroke and Side

Stroke; ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies; ability to perform rescue actions, administer first aid and CPR.

Special Qualifications: Must possess current certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, CPR for Professional

Rescuer First Aid and Safety, AED, and Emergency Oxygen Administration. Lifeguards are expected to keep their

certifications current.

If certifications are not current, but be able to earn or update before employment.

Work Environment

Tasks require a variety of physical activities generally involving muscular strain. Physical demands may occur in activities

related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, running, jumping, etc. Talking, hearing and seeing required in the

daily performance of job duties. Occasional exposure to environmental hazards resulting from working in a recreational

environment. Mental application utilizes memory for details, emotional stability and discriminating thinking and creative

problem solving.
