We are the Surface Data and Analytics for Software and Hardware (DASH) team, on a mission to instill a “culture of data” within the Surface organization. We are inviting applications from skilled Data Engineers with a background in telemetry analysis and software/hardware development.

Our team navigates a vast problem space, from building and deploying end-to-end pipelines accessing big data platforms, creating data models to transform data, engineering aggregation engines to power dashboards, to conducting traditional software and hardware telemetry analysis, sentiment analysis, user behavior analysis, return analysis, manufacturing analysis, and more. We collaborate across E+D, striving to understand the complete customer experience with a Surface device. We play a pivotal role in connecting our Hardware/Software/Firmware development teams to telemetry-based insights through pre-release device self-host data and in-market retail devices data. We believe in the power of telemetry to enable our strategy of delivering desirable and powerful devices.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

As a part of our team, you will work closely with diverse teams such as Engineering, Program Management, Data Science, Design, and application partners. We will rely on your expertise to build data solutions that evaluate the return on investments on new ideas, assess if investments are meeting customer and business promises, design and assess experiments, measure growth, and derive insights that help identify the next wave of opportunities and problems to be solved.

Your role will involve:

  • Design and develop distributed cloud-scale data pipelines and software services that are engineered for scale, availability, high performance, and high reliability.

  • Own and deliver complete features including design, architecture, implementation, testability, debugging, and shipping.

  • Collaborate with internal partner teams and external customer teams drive key platform experiences and innovate scenarios to support new capabilities.

  • Advocate for best practices in data engineering.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • 3+ Experience in a Data Engineer or Software Engineer role with a focus on cloud-based big data processing.

  • Experience in developing tools and data pipelines using Azure Data Factory, Synapse, Apache Spark or similar tools.

  • Experience in building and optimizing "big data" workflows using modern cloud-based platforms, including ETL,

  • Experience in supporting business intelligence data pipelines, serving data exploration and visualization tools like Azure Data Explorer and Power BI.

  • Strong understanding of data modeling and data architecture design patterns.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Azure services and administration thereof.

  • Experience in designing/implementing large-scale data infrastructure to support a Data Science team.

  • Ability to write code in a variety of programming/scripting languages such as Python, C++/C#, Java and/or PowerShell, etc.

  • Familiarity with relational databases.

  • Working knowledge of a variety of big data sources in Spark, Scala, and/or other big data systems.
