    Ballard Community School District, a district with approximately 1700 students located minutes from Ames and the Des Moines metro, has an opening for a school nurse for the 2024-2025 school year. Basic Function: Developing plans for student care based on assessment, interventions, and identification of outcomes, and the evaluation of care. Monitoring immunizations, managing communicable diseases, and assessing the school environment to prevent injury and ensure safety.

Provide management of a comprehensive school health program by assessing, planning/coordinating, implementing and evaluating school health services in order to achieve the following goals: maximize in-class time by reducing health-related absenteeism, eliminate or minimize health problems which impair learning, and achieve the highest possible degree of independent student functioning.

The school nurse will serve as program manager/coordinator, case manager/care provider, collaborator, advocate, educator, and counselor for health concerns of the school.


  • Qualified to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa and holds an unrestricted license

  • Preferred Bachelor of Science in Nursing

  • Certified in CPR and First Aid

Essential Functions: Program Manager: In this role the school nurse addresses the health care needs of school-wide health service issues that affect the entire school population.

  • Works collaboratively with health care providers, student’s parents, school district staff and community agencies to ensure access and continuity of care for students.

  • Maintain up-to-date cumulative health records and mandatory immunization certificates on all students.

  • Assume authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury or emergency illness.

  • Participate with school staff in developing and implementing a total school health program.

  • Advise on the exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infections and contagious diseases.

  • Assist with the kindergarten round-up program on health issues and immunization requirements.

  • Demonstrate organization and professionalism in fulfilling the responsibilities of the job.

  • Greet all students, faculty, staff, and visitors courteously.

  • Maintain a positive rapport with students, staff, parents and the community.

  • Cooperate with and work in a courteous manner with co-workers and other personnel.

  • Dress appropriately for the position and work required.

  • Demonstrate a positive attitude toward school, students, and job and communicate the same to the community.

  • Accept constructive criticism and suggestions and seek to improve each performance responsibility.

  • Maintain confidentiality in the school operation.

  • Adhere to applicable state and federal laws, rules, and regulations, board policies and administrative rules.

  • Assume primary responsibility for maintaining an appropriate inventory of medical aid supplies in the school.

Case Manager/Care Provider: In this role the school nurse addresses the health care needs of individual students or small groups of students.

  • Advise on the modification of the educational program to meet health needs of individual students.

  • Advise teachers on health matters, particularly regarding screening for student health problems.

  • Assist school personnel in monitoring the school environment for student safety.

  • Attend committee meetings and conferences regarding health service and health curriculum.

  • Dispense student medication.

  • Assist in a program for care of disabled children.


  • Conduct in-service training programs as needed including, but not limited to seizure, asthma, and epi-pen training.

  • Serve as a member of the school’s Medical Emergency Response Team and assist the principal with all matters relating to the same.

  • Counsel students in good health habits.


  • Act as liaison with helping agencies such as the Department of Human Services, etc. when assigned to do so.

  • Cooperate with school personnel in identifying and meeting social, emotional, and physical needs of school children.

  • Work with community agencies in planning facilities to meet needs of children outside school situations

  • Provides support and collaboration to the CMA at East Elementary.
