Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:

Performs complex and highly advanced managerial work establishing and growing the network of external partners and managing and protecting intellectual property assets created within Sam Houston State University ( SHSU ).

Primary Responsibilities (Staff Positions Only):

Identifies and establishes strategic partnerships with government agencies, industry leaders, non-profit organizations, and other educational institutions that can help the university make progress towards strategic goals and enhance the research/development and commercialization efforts of the University. Maintains an institutional repository of all strategic partnerships, agreements, and interactions. Cultivates and maintains strong relationships with external stakeholders and connects external stakeholders to appropriate university personnel to create opportunities for collaboration throughout the University. Identifies external funding opportunities, such as local, regional and national grants, and aligns those opportunities with institutional initiatives to expand and elevate our service to the state and increase the visibility of Sam Houston State University ( SHSU ). Leads efforts to seek and secure funding grants and contracts involving joint public-private partnerships to grow the impact and service of SHSU to the state and beyond (e.g., EDA Recompete grant). Develops initiatives to cultivate a culture of entrepreneurships among university scholars by connecting the innovation and discovery ecosystem at SHSU with private industry and potential commercial partners. Collaborates with university researchers regarding inventions and the commercialization process. Oversees and manages the intellectual property disclosure process and coordinates review of disclosures by the Intellectual Property (IP) committee. Assesses the technical and commercial potential of disclosed inventions and ensures all documents have been completed. Communicates with inventors to ensure that applications are complete. Ensures that invention disclosures receive legal review in preparation for patent application filing. Assists with provisional patent applications and ensures compliance with all government policies and obligations regarding invention reporting. Develops and implements strategies to successfully market and license inventions. Identifies potential industry partners capable and interested in commercializing technologies through market research and network of contacts. Identifies external funding opportunities (public and private) to further develop SHSU IP and other technologies into viable concepts for commercialization. Assists with drafting and negotiating agreements. Prepares term sheets for license negotiations. Monitors and collects information related to industry workforce and R&D needs across that region through feedback from the strategic partner network and provides feedback to the campus community of the private sector needs to help inform academic units of potential growth areas for curriculum development, internship/apprenticeship opportunities, and research initiatives. Serves as local associate director of the Texas Manufacturing Assistance Center ( TMAC ) grant to growth the regional network of manufacturers who need upskilling/reskilling opportunities for their current workforce. Coordinates the development of training programs for TMAC , manages delivery of these trainings to TMAC customers by identifying and securing external partners, and manages program income. Performs other related duties as assigned.
