Position Description Summary:

APT Research is hiring a System Safety Engineer to influence design for meeting safety expectations and requirements for Northrop Grumman Products. The successful candidate will independently analyze and recommend design features that meet safety criteria in system design to control or eliminate hazards. This position is located in Huntsville, AL.

The tasks include,

  • Active participation in the design of products/systems, associated support equipment and facilities.

  • The creation of functional specifications and establishes safety requirements for assigned systems.

  • Developing safety documents, as required, to support customer and test/operational range requirements and performing audits of operational areas and reporting on the effectiveness of system safety program.

  • Evaluating the interrelationship of system safety requirements and other aspects of concept design and development requirements to ensure the most cost -effective program.

  • Expertise in the application of MIL-STD-882E in design development.

  • Experience in the generation of required artifacts such as System Safety Program Plans, System Safety Analysis Reports and Functional Hazards Analysis Reports.

  • Experience in the application of safety principles and methods to mature the weapons systems design for safety and support flight test and flight worthiness of complex systems.

    Required Experience:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills of the English language

  • Experience using MIL-STD-882E for design development

    Required Minimum Education/Experience:

  • 7 years of experience with a bachelor's degree or 5 years with a master's degree in science, engineering, applied mathematics, computer science, aeronautics, safety or a closely related technical discipline.

    Preferred Experience:

  • Software development or coding experience

  • Hypersonics experience

  • Experience using DO-178 for design development

  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP) /Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Certificate

  • Weapon system experience (Minuteman III or similar military or industry experience)

  • Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) experience

  • Military range safety experience

  • Able to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP)

    Security Clearance Requirement:

  • Active DoD Secret clearance obtained within the last 6 years

    Work Environment:

  • Office environment.

  • Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate, and timely communication, both verbally and written.

  • Ability to interact professionally with coworkers, management, and customers.

  • Requires ability to travel domestically (within the U.S.) <15%.

    Physical Requirements:

  • Requires sitting for extended periods of time at a workstation / desk.

  • Ability to lift >15 lbs.

    Other Essential Functions:

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgement.

  • Work attire must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk / hazard to the employee or others.
