Jacobs ESSCA Group Senior Thermal/Fluid Analysis Engineer #ADV0008VK in Huntsville, Alabama

The liquid engine systems thermal/fluid analysis engineer is the subject matter expert in liquid propellant rocket engines with experience and proficiency in design, analysis, test, and operation.

Job Duties:

Review engine system analysis and test documentation submitted by program prime contractors for compliance with applicable standards and requirements.

Participate in development of engine interface requirements, engine operation and maintenance requirements, and engine launch commit criteria.

Monitor data console during engine and vehicle stage ground tests and integrated vehicle launches.

Perform assessments of engine operational data from ground tests and flight missions to evaluate thermal performance.

Develop heat transfer and conjugate heat transfer and fluid flow models using empirical, classical, and computational techniques to simulate engine component thermal response.

Prepare technical documentation of analysis and data assessments and present findings to program and project stakeholders.

Mentor junior engineers in liquid engine system design, analysis, test, and operation.

Promulgate thermal/fluid analysis best practices and lessons learned from heritage and current engine development, verification, and operation programs.

Attend program milestone reviews to verify compliance to entry/exit/success criteria, document discrepancies with recommended corrective actions, and identify emerging risks and opportunities.

Job Requirements:

A degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field with a minimum of 30 years of professional practice is required. A degree from an ABET accredited university is preferred. An MS and/or PhD is preferred and is equivalent to two and six years, respectively, of professional practice. Licensure as a Professional Engineer is desirable.

Required skills and experience:

Design, verification, test, and operation experience in heritage Space Shuttle Main Engine and Space Launch System RS-25 and RL-10 engine systems.

Effective technical writing and presentation.

Proficiency using Microsoft 365 Applications.

Proficiency using NASA MSFC WinPlot data processing application.

Desired skills and experience:

Commercial engine systems in operation or development, e.g. BE-3, BE-4, Merlin, Raptor.

Thermal/fluid model development in Thermal Desktop, MIG, and/or Ansys for steady state and transient solution.

Customized environment modeling using Fortran language routines in SINDA/FLUINT and/or GFSSP; Ansys Parametric Design Language.

Classical heat and mass transfer, fluid flow, and thermodynamics analysis techniques.

Finite element modeling using Ansys, Patran, or Femap.

Data processing and presentation using Matlab, Python, etc.

Familiarity with NASA and DoD standards and specifications for launch and upper stage vehicles.
