Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Perform structural engineering design tasks through application of AASHTO LRFD specifications and design-oriented computer programs.

  • Assist in the preparation of bridge project documentation including plan sets, specifications, and engineering estimates including the collection, assembling, and organizing of project data.

  • Participate in plan and shop drawing reviews.

  • Drafting using MicroStation.

  • Interaction and collaboration with various different engineering disciplines and other consultants.

  • Attend internal and external project meetings.

  • Experience in performing in-service bridge safety and ancillary inspections

  • Responsibilities will require working compensated overtime when necessary

Nonessential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Skills

  • Knowledge of structural design principles for steel, reinforced concrete, and prestressed concrete for structure components.

  • Ability to design structures with varying levels of complexity.

  • Ability to work on multiple projects in a dynamic, team-oriented environment.

  • Ability to organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments with little supervision.

  • Experience in serving as Team Leader performing in-service bridge safety inspections.

  • Experience in using Microsoft Office software including WORD and EXCEL.

  • Excellent verbal, written

Required Experience

  • BS or MS in Civil Engineering with concentration in structures from a 4-year accredited university.

  • 5 to 10+ years of AASHTO LRFD bridge structural design, bridge load rating, bridge inspection, and rehabilitation design experience.

  • Be a qualified Bridge Inspection Team Leader.

  • Experience using MicroStation.

  • Experience in AASHTO LRFD bridge design.

  • Maryland PE Certification.

  • Experience working with the Maryland Department of Transportation.

  • Experience using structural analysis and design software, MicroStation drafting software, Mathcad, and proficiency in Microsoft Office software including WORD and EXCEL.

    Preferred Experience

  • MS in Civil Engineering.

  • Formal Project Management Training.

  • Proficiency with MathCAD

  • Licensed Engineer in the state of Maryland.

  • Experience working with the Texas Department of Transportation.

  • Licensed Engineer in the state of Texas.

Preferred Certifications

  • OSHA Fall Protection Training

  • OSHA Confined Space Training

  • Maryland SHA Temporary Traffic Control Manager

  • VDOT Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Certification

  • CSX/Norfolk Southern RR Contractor Safety Badge

  • MTA RR Contractor Safety Badge

  • Snooper and Bucket Truck training

  • Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) training

  • TWIC Card

Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment 60% of the time. Of which, the work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.

The remaining 40% of the work will be inspecting bridges or other transportation structures. Inspection work will be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions and on uneven terrain or surfaces. Candidate must have the ability to perform inspections while bending, kneeling, or standing, and lift or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds as needed. Work will require the operation of access equipment and performing inspections at heights requiring fall protection, and in confined spaces requiring confined space equipment. Inspection work may require short duration out-of-town travel.
