MD Anderson Cancer Center Senior Research Histology Technician - Veterinary Medicine & Surgery in Houston, Texas

The Veterinary Medicine and Surgery department exists to serve MD Anderson research programs. Our primary mission is to provide the best possible veterinary care, facilities and services in support of the institutional animal care and use program, in keeping with all applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) accreditation standards.

KEY FUNCTIONS

Specimen Collection, Handling, and Tissue Processing

· Receives and accessions specimens submitted to the laboratory or necropsy room, prepares microscope slides of animal tissues, and produces stained slides or other required product for Pathologist review.

· Performs tissue preparation and histotechnique, to include necropsy, grossing, fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, and mounting of paraffin-embedded and frozen tissues, and other special procedures.

· Follows project-specific instructions from Pathologists and/or investigators.

· Delivers completed cases as directed.

· Selects and runs appropriate controls as required for specific testing.

· Performs quality check on each slide, and checks controls before signing out cases.

· Archives wet tissues, slide files, paraffin block files, and Archive Room records.

· Keeps Archive Room clean and in order.

· Communicates with personnel and investigators in a courteous and professional manner.

Documentation

· Assigns accession numbers to specimens/animal received and labels accordingly.

· Ensures that submittal information is entered correctly in the electronic or other logbook and specimens are labeled accurately.

Equipment and Area Maintenance

· Performs routine and specialized maintenance on laboratory equipment including, but not limited to, microtomes, cryostat, tissue processors, automated cover slipper, and automated H&E stainer.

· Assigned maintenance of specific equipment may be rotated on a regular basis to maintain competence in the laboratory.

Other duties as assigned

· When necessary, provide backup duties for Chief, Histology Laboratory, including, but not limited to, daily task assignments for histology staff, handling of customer service issues/complains, trouble shooting of any malfunction equipment, and final revision of cases in iLab.

Education

Required: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience

Required: With required education, five years of Histology Technician experience.

With Associate's degree, three years experience in histopathology within the last ten years under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology, or eligible) or an appropriately certified medical scientist. With successful completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Histotechnician program, one year of required experience. Histology Technician (HT) certification with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).

Certification

Required: None.

Preferred: Histology Technician/Technologist Certification
