Your Opportunity

We are seeking a creative and talented engineer to support our client with Risk Management as we pursue data driven quantitative risk analysis (QRA). The ideal candidate will have a solid background in data mining and machine using large datasets from SQL databases and GIS, and have a thorough understanding of data engineering.

You will play a pivotal role in analyzing and leveraging disparate data from multiple systems to drive critical business decisions, enhance operational efficiency, and improve the overall performance of our pipeline operations. You will work closely with cross-functional teams and leverage your expertise in Python, SQL, and GIS to support the department’s data needs.

This position will be working with our Energy business operating unit and client in the Houston TX area.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Risk Engineers, GIS Specialists, and IT professionals to architect and develop data-driven applications and tools for risk monitoring, long range planning and optimization.

  • Respond promptly to data requests from Risk Engineers to support Quantitative Risk Analysis, often under tight deadlines.

  • Design and implement data pipelines and ETL processes to automate data extraction and transformation to meet Risk Management and QRA needs.

  • Utilize Python and SQL programming to extract, clean, and analyze data from various sources, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), In-Line Inspection (ILI) Data Management Systems, etc.

  • Perform exploratory analysis of large data sets to identify patterns, anomalies, and optimization opportunities within pipeline operations.

  • Independently assess and apply the required data mining techniques and statistical tests, including but not limited to: ANOVA, Laplace Test, PCA, NLP, Autocorrelation, etc.

  • Produce informative and aesthetically pleasing visuals for consumption by stakeholders across the organization (e.g., correlation matrices, box plots, geospatial maps, etc.).

  • Apply machine learning to build classification, regression, and clustering models for a range of applications within and outside of Risk Management.

  • Build advanced models such as Neural Networks, Bayesian Belief Networks, Stochastic Process (Poisson, Markov), Proportional Hazard, etc.

  • Develop Time Series and Forecasting models, incorporating stochastic processes such as Brownian motion as applicable.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials:

  • Proficient in Python and relevant libraries such as NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, PyMC3, PyTorch, TensorFlow, etc.

  • Strong knowledge of RDBMs and SQL Server scripting

  • Proficient in ESRI ArcGIS products and ArcPy.

  • Demonstrable experience in Statistical Model building and Machine Learning for solving complex engineering problems.

  • Strong knowledge of survey calculations, coordinate systems and transformations, data collection, and interpretation of geophysical survey datasets (multibeam bathymetry, sidescan sonar, subbottom profiler, magnetometer data).

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders

  • Willingness to work extended hours as needed to meet project deadlines.

  • Must have a good driving record and valid Driver's License.

  • Prior to employment with Stantec, this position will require the successful passing of a drug & alcohol screen.

Preferred:

  • Experience with Database Management, virtual warehouses and resource monitoring (SQL Server, Snowflake, DBT, Microsoft Azure)

  • Experience with natural language processing and text mining

  • Knowledge of Operations Research topics, specifically linear and non-linear optimization, decision trees, multi-criteria decision-making

  • Understanding of Large Language Models (LLMs) and prompt engineering

  • Knowledge of quantitative risk analysis and related disciplines (e.g., reliability, asset integrity)

  • Experience in oil and gas pipeline operating company

  • Experience with PowerBI or other Business Intelligence tools or a willingness to learn

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or another technical field, Master’s Degree preferred

  • 5 years of directly relevant work experience
