Direct Air Capture uses proven industrial processes to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) directly from ambient air. This CO2 can then be stored safely and securely underground or used to make things we all need in everyday life. These facilities are important because they help enable companies in hard-to-abate industries to reach their global climate targets. 

 

STRATOS is on track to become the world’s largest Direct Air Capture facility. Currently under construction, it is designed to capture up to 500,00 tons of atmospheric CO2 annually and is expected to be commercially operational in mid-2025. Oxy subsidiary 1PointFive will own the facility, with OxyChem responsible for its operation and maintenance.

Description

As the OxyChem DAC Process Engineer located in Houston, TX you will be responsible for the process development and implementation of one or more DAC facilities (Stratos, South Texas) being designed, constructed, and commissioned in multiple regions. You will work in both an office setting supporting project and process design needs, as well as at the operating facilities supporting onsite troubleshooting and process optimization efforts. The primarily work location will be at Greenway Plaza in Houston, TX with frequent trips to the facility sites during project commissioning, startup, and on-going operations. (Stratos - DAC, South Texas) Specific responsibilities include:

 

  • Participate on the Low Carbon Venture Project Management Team to support the overall needs and goals of the DAC Projects and OxyChem O&M cost reductions and efficiency improvements
  • Participate in the Project Design Basis, H&MB, PFD/P&ID, and 3D model development
  • Support the Project Hazard Analysis and Management of Change project programs as a process safety expert for on-going operations
  • Interface and engage with Carbon Engineering on innovation and design improvements for application to commercial DAC facilities
  • Effectively incorporate process changes as required for this first-of-a-kind technology to enhance the process
  • Develop into a Subject Matter Expert for the Direct Air Capture technology and unit operations
  • Participate in development and maintenance of the facility operating procedures, process guidelines, and documented best practices
  • Provide support to manufacturing sites assisting with troubleshooting process issues based on experience and expertise
  • Provide technical assistance, reviews, and training to the technical, operations, and maintenance teams to enhance their technical capabilities
  • Train and mentor engineers who are early in their careers on the technology, KPI's, and troubleshooting.
  • Interface with vendors and subcontractors to provide timely advice and answers to technical inquiries to keep them on schedule and on budget
  • Communicate, implement, and assure compliance with governmental rules and regulations, as well as company plans, programs, policies, and procedures involved with the conduct of a safe, clean, environmentally sound, and efficient facility

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering with a preferred minimum 10 years of chemical manufacturing, major project engineering, construction, and commissioning experience in the chemical or petrochemical industries
  • High proficiency in Microsoft applications (such as Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to read, write and speak in English
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work as part of a team and to develop team members
  • Ability to make technically and economically sound recommendations with incomplete information and in the time required
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently
  • Self-starter with a strong desire to deliver superior results
  • Strong analytical/problem solving/trouble shooting skills
  • A proven team player capable of working in a multi-discipline team environment with a desire to share knowledge
  • May require extensive domestic travel and some occasional international travel to support assignments
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays and respond to callouts on a non-routine basis
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs, climb ladders and stairs
  • Walking, bending, stooping is required
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment including the use of a respirator and be able to respond to visual and audible alarms

 

Additional Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with Aspen Plus or HYSYS
  • Experience with SmartPlant P&ID
  • Knowledge of industry codes, regulations, and best practices
  • Broad base of knowledge in chemical manufacturing operations with process equipment expertise in solids processing and handling, including fluidized beds, filtration, centrifuges, and calcining unit operations.
