MD Anderson Cancer Center Genetic Counselor in Houston, Texas

We are hiring a Genetic Counselor for our Clinical Cancer Genetics Program! The Clinical Cancer Genetics Program at MD Anderson Cancer Center is dedicated to providing hereditary cancer risk assessment and consultation services.

Our multidisciplinary team is comprised of specially trained Genetic Counselors and physicians who work together to provide education, hereditary cancer risk assessment, genetic counseling and genetic testing, individualized cancer screening and prevention programs to people who are concerned about their personal and family history of cancer.

Key Functions

I. Direct Patient Care Provider

· Provide detailed cancer risk assessment and genetic counseling services to patients and families referred to the Clinical Cancer Genetics Program

· Assess recurrence risk and recommend medical or genetic testing based on analysis of the risks, benefit, and cost and facilitates cancer gene testing, when appropriate

· Interpret genetic testing results and communicate results to the patient and referring provider. Documentation of these results will be placed in the patient's MD Anderson electronic medical record and Clinical Cancer Genetics' Databases (i.e., Progeny, etc.)

· Refer patients to other specialties when appropriate (i.e., Medical Oncology, Gynecologic Oncology, Gastroenterology, Health Psychology, etc.)

· Provide cross coverage, as necessary

· Obtain out of state genetic counseling licensure(s), as necessary

· Direct patient care will be performed via virtual (telephone or video) platforms or in person

II. Liaison and Education

· Serve as a department, institutional and community liaison for presentations and outreach activities for specific programs and projects. This will include, but is not limited to participation in multidisciplinary conferences, grand rounds, provider and patient conferences, sponsor programs, outreach events, etc.

· Assist in the development and preparation of promotional, educational and referral materials; as well as various other media

· Conduct public and professional presentations

· Provide education to the public, students and health care professionals in hereditary cancer and genetic counseling

· Participate in instruction, perform supervisory roles and evaluate students during their cancer rotation(s) from GSBS, Emory, Baylor, etc.

III. Clinical and Research Studies

· Assist and participate in clinical and research studies by participating in design, writing , editing and implementation

· Initiate new clinical and research projects in collaboration with faculty member(s) or multidisciplinary team(s)

· Assist in the recruitment and communication of/with participants from both inside and outside of MD Anderson

· Review clinical and research study materials, patient charts, etc.

IV. Other Functions

· This position may require travel to other MD Anderson locations

Education

Required: Master's degree in Genetic Counseling.

Certification/Licensure

Must successfully pass the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certification exam within the first 180 days of entry into Genetic Counselor job title.
